Premier Burt’s Remarks On Half Marathon Derby
Premier David Burt praised the Bermuda Half Marathon Derby’s legacy and paid tribute to longtime president Dr. Gina Tucker during remarks at the event.
Speaking at the prizegiving on Friday, Premier Burt said, “Welcome to the Bermuda Half Marathon Derby. As we celebrate the 117th running of the Bermuda Half Marathon Derby, I understand that participation numbers are on track to make history.
“And this morning, I want to pay special tribute to someone who has played an extraordinary role in protecting and strengthening that tradition, Dr. Gina Tucker. Although she is not here today, she certainly deserves recognition for her contributions to the Derby as President for nearly two decades.
“Dr. Tucker dedicated herself to ensuring that this event continued to grow while remaining true to the spirit that has made it so important to Bermuda. Under her leadership, the Derby modernized and expanded, while continuing to be a uniquely Bermudian event.
“She has done this work in service to the community, alongside the many supporters who help make this day possible year after year. I also want to congratulate Ms. Melissa Looby and wish her every success as she takes on this important responsibility and continues the work of preserving this treasured Bermudian tradition for future generations.
“The Government is proud to support the Bermuda Half Marathon Derby because events like this bring people together and remind us that our traditions are worth protecting and passing on.
“So to every participant today, whether you are racing for a title, racing for personal pride, or simply determined to cross that finish line, Bermuda is cheering you on. Thank you, and God bless Bermuda.”
