Spirit Of Bermuda Returns To Newport Race

The ‘Spirit of Bermuda’ will take part in this year’s Newport to Bermuda race, with the 635-nautical mile race set to take place next month.

A statement from the Newport Race organisers said, “A legendary race deserves a legendary boat.

“In 2026, the Newport Bermuda Race will celebrate its 120th anniversary, along with 100 years of partnership between the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Marking the milestone year is the return of a powerful symbol of Bermuda’s maritime heritage — the Spirit of Bermuda.

“Bermuda’s national tall ship was design in Newport by Langan Designs launched in 2006 and modeled after historic Bermudian schooners from the early 1800s. Operated by the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, the vessel has introduced more than 8,500 Bermudian students to life under sail through its youth training programs.

“After overcoming significant challenges during the pandemic, the Foundation has restored Spirit of Bermuda to full ocean-racing form — and her return to the ‘Thrash to the Onion Patch’ will be a proud moment for the island.

“On board for the 2026 race will be Bermudian sailors Skipper Mario Swainson and First Officer Tristan DeSilva, both alumni of the foundation’s program, along with Bermuda’s governor Andrew Murdoch. Charterer Rick Thomas, a lifelong Bermudian, says sailing the iconic vessel into Bermuda with family cheering from the dock will be a dream come true.

“As Spirit of Bermuda approaches her 20th anniversary, her return to the race represents more than competition — it celebrates the island’s enduring maritime culture and the next generation of sailors she continues to inspire.”
