Reduce Rodent Activity & Mosquito Breeding

The Ministry of Health is “reminding residents across Bermuda to take simple but important steps to reduce rodent activity and prevent mosquito breeding.”

A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Health is reminding residents across Bermuda to take simple but important steps to reduce rodent activity and prevent mosquito breeding as warmer months create conditions that allow both pests to multiply.”

Minister of Health Kim Wilson said, “The Ministry’s Vector Control team has seen an increase in reports of rodent activity in recent weeks.

“Rodent control is not only about comfort. It is about protecting our homes, our neighbourhoods, and our health. One of the most effective steps residents can take is to use proper trash bins with tight fitting lids and to place household waste out only on the designated collection day. When waste is unsecured, it becomes a food source that attracts rodents and encourages them to settle in our neighbourhoods.

“Every resident can make a meaningful difference by keeping their surroundings clean and removing the conditions that allow rodents to breed.”

The Government spokesperson said, “The Minister also highlighted the importance of mosquito prevention as the island enters the period when mosquito breeding increases sharply.”

Minister Wilson said, “Mosquitos need only a small amount of standing water to reproduce. By regularly checking your property and emptying containers, clearing gutters, and refreshing outdoor water sources, you help protect your household and your neighbours. Mosquito control is a shared responsibility and one that benefits the entire community.”

The Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry’s Vector Control and Environmental Health teams continue to conduct year‑round surveillance, ovitrapping, and property inspections. Bait boxes for rodent control remain available to the public at a modest cost, and servicing is provided at no charge.

“Minister Wilson encouraged residents to reach out if they need assistance.”

Minister Wilson said, “Our officers are here to help. If you have concerns about rodents or mosquitos on your property, please contact the Vector Control team. We are committed to supporting every member of our community in keeping Bermuda healthy and safe.”

The Government spokesperson said, “Residents may contact Vector Control at 246-7766and email vectorcontrol@gov.bm for guidance or to request an inspection.”
