World Asthma Day Event At City Hall
Bermuda will be marking World Asthma Day on Tuesday [May 5] with a public event at City Hall aimed at raising awareness, promoting respiratory health, and supporting those living with asthma.
Nicola MacDougall, Asthma & COPD Educator, Open Airways said, “Bermuda will join the global community in recognizing World Asthma Day with a vibrant and educational public event on the steps of City Hall on Tuesday, May 5th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event aims to raise awareness about asthma, promote better respiratory health, and empower individuals across the island to live active, healthy lives.
“World Asthma Day is observed annually to highlight the challenges faced by people living with asthma and to encourage improved care, education, and support. In Bermuda, where asthma affects a significant portion of the population—approximately 8,000 people—ongoing education and access to resources remain essential. This year Open Airways is emphasizing the importance of staying active with asthma, reinforcing the message that “active lungs are healthy lungs.”
“The celebration promises to be both informative and engaging. Asthma educators will be on hand to answer questions and provide guidance to attendees seeking to better understand and manage their asthma. Pharmacists from CG Pharmacy will also be present to offer advice on medications and the correct use of spacers—an essential tool in effective asthma treatment.
“Attendees who speak with the asthma educators will walk away with a complimentary spacer and goodie bag. Additionally, anyone with asthma is encouraged to sign up for a free one-hour asthma consultation. Those who complete the consultation [scheduled for a later date] will receive a voucher redeemable for a free pillow from Masters Limited.
“The event will also feature a lively programme of performances and activities. School children from across the island will showcase their talents, while the Bermuda Jump Rope Federation will deliver an energetic demonstration. Fitness experts from Beyond Fitness Bermuda will lead an interactive exercise session, encouraging attendees to participate and experience how physical activity can be safely incorporated into daily life with asthma.
“The event will be officially opened by the Town Crier and formal remarks will be delivered by the Mayor of Hamilton and the Minister of Health, underscoring the importance of community-wide efforts in addressing asthma care. The day will conclude with a performance by the Bermuda Pipe Band.
“Open Airways are encouraging all residents—whether living with asthma, caring for someone who is, or simply interested in learning more—to attend. The event is free, open to the public, and designed to foster a supportive, informed, and active community.
“As Open Airways continues its mission to help Bermuda breathe better, this year’s World Asthma Day celebration serves as a reminder that with the right knowledge, tools, and support, everyone can take control of their asthma and live life to the fullest.”
