Bermudian excellence was on full display at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, where Khano Smith, Clyde Best and Glenn Jones attended a special screening of The Clyde Best Story, a film celebrating Mr Best’s barrier breaking career.

The trio of highly accomplished Bermudians are uniquely connected by their careers, as Clyde Best is a barrier-breaking football player who helped pave the way for the Black players of today, Khano Smith was, at one stage, the only Black head coach in the USL soccer league in the USA, a fact which was highlighted on an NBC10 television broadcast by the Emmy award-winning journalist Glenn Jones.

Mr Smith noted Mr Best’s trailblazing career saying, “I am grateful for the path you blazed and will never take the responsibility I hold for granted.”

In a post on his Instagram account, Mr Smith said, “I had the honor & the privilege to attend the The Clyde Best Story last night at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Wonderfully produced by Dan Egan and shown as a Part of the Rox Film.

“An amazing story of a 17-year-old boy from the little island of Bermuda who went to England on his own to chase his dream. Goes onto play for West Ham United and some of the best players in the World. Through all this dealing with the hate, racism, and discrimination of the 1970’s, he still managed to perform at the highest level and handle himself with kindness, class, and professionalism.

“Thank you, sir, for teaching us all so many valuable lessons on how to treat each other. Thank you for teaching all of us little boys in Bermuda that we are never too small to dream.

“To think I can now coach against a team you used to play for in the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Played in a league in which another one of your former teams, the Portland Timbers, now plays. I am grateful for the path you blazed and will never take the responsibility I hold for granted.

“Your words of advice and encouragement will always stick with me. Always great to see my fellow Bermudian and friend Glenn Jones at this event. The best part of this was being able to share it with my daughter and show her why I can do what I do, and the people who paved the way.”
