John D. Osmond Memorial Prize Established

The Bermuda Race Foundation has established the John D. Osmond Memorial Prize in honour of longtime Newport Bermuda Race leader and offshore sailor Dr. John D. Osmond III.

A spokesperson said, “Three prizes will be awarded for the Best performance by a first-time Bermuda Race Skipper [Person in Charge] for boats competing in each of the Corinthian focused divisions [St. David’s Lighthouse, Finisterre, and Double-Handed Divisions]. Eligible competitors must be the designated PIC for the entry and must display a valid World Sailing Group 1 Categorization per NOR 7 in the entry system.

“Dr. Osmond competed in 15 Newport Bermuda Races and served the race and the sport of offshore sailing in numerous leadership roles, including Chairman of the Newport Bermuda Race and later Principal Race Officer. He was widely respected for his steady leadership, sportsmanship, and lifelong commitment to offshore racing.”

The Newport Bermuda Race is a 636-mile biennial ocean sailing competition from Newport, Rhode Island to Bermuda, and the 2026 race is scheduled to begin on June 19th.
