PCA Explores GCSE Portuguese Programme

The Portuguese Cultural Association of Bermuda [PCA] has launched a feasibility and development programme aimed at enabling Bermudian students of Portuguese heritage to sit the GCSE or IGCSE in Portuguese through their secondary schools.

A spokesperson said, “The Portuguese Cultural Association of Bermuda [PCA] is pleased to announce the launch of a feasibility and development programme aimed at enabling Bermudian students of Portuguese heritage to sit the General Certificate of Secondary Education [GCSE] or International General Certificate of Secondary Education [IGCSE] in Portuguese through their respective secondary schools, supported by preparation provided through the Escola Portuguesa da Bermuda.

“The GCSE and IGCSE are internationally recognised British qualifications typically taken by students aged 14 to 16. Both are widely accepted by universities in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Canada and the United States. For the children of Bermuda’s Portuguese-speaking community, many of whom have been studying Portuguese for years at the Escola Portuguesa, these qualifications represent a meaningful and portable credential that formally recognises skills they have worked hard to develop.

“The initiative builds on the PCA’s protocol of cooperation with Camões, IP, the Portuguese Institute for Cooperation and Language, signed in November 2023. Camões has direct experience in teaching and examining Portuguese students inline with the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Portuguese syllabus, which is used by Portuguese community schools across the United Kingdom, and has confirmed its readiness to support the PCA in introducing the qualification in Bermuda, including through the preparation of the PCA’s teacher for the speaking assessment component of the examination.

“The Edexcel GCSE Portuguese [qualification code 1PG0] assesses all four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - and is available at Foundation and Higher tiers. The Cambridge IGCSE First Language Portuguese [0504] places greater emphasis on reading and writing at a high literary level and is suited to stronger heritage speakers. Both qualifications are already available through schools in Bermuda that are approved examination centres for Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International respectively.

“The PCA is now inviting families across the Portuguese-speaking community in Bermuda to share their views through a short survey, available at the link here. Responses are requested by 30 June 2026.”

A Level Bermuda June 10 2026

“This is a natural next step for the Portuguese School and for our community,” said Richard Ambrosio, Chairman of the Portuguese Cultural Association of Bermuda. “For many of our students, Portuguese is not a foreign language; it is the language of their home, their family and their heritage.

“These qualifications give them the opportunity to have that recognised formally, by a credential that will follow them through university applications and their careers. We are grateful to Camões for their active support, and we look forward to hearing from families across the community as we develop this programme.”

A spokesperson added, “Should it prove successful, the PCA may consider expanding it to offer A-Level Portuguese in the future.”
