Video: Gombey Regalia Artistry Highlighted
The Department of Culture released an excellent video highlighting Kelzine Thompson, who has been making Gombey regalia for over 40 years and leading classes since 2022.
The video’s description says, “Tradition-bearer Kelzine Thompson has been making Gombey regalia for over 40 years and has been leading classes since 2022. In the Cultural Apprenticeship Programme, she shared her knowledge and skills with apprentices Marco Santucci, Katharyn Albuoy, Jahbarri Wilson and Nicole Young.
“Bermuda Gombeys wear unique, colourful regalia with subtle differences to distinguish each troupe. The regalia are known for their bright tassels and small mirrors. The capes are customised for each Gombey and feature embroidery and other trimmings.”
