Breastfeeding Awareness Week Set For August

The Bermuda National Breastfeeding Committee and the Department of Health will observe Breastfeeding Awareness Week from August 4 to 8 with a series of educational and community events.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Bermuda National Breastfeeding Committee in collaboration with the Department of Health will observe Breastfeeding Awareness Week from August 4–8, highlighting the importance of breastfeeding and the value of community support for mothers and families. This year’s programme offers practical learning opportunities, shared experiences, and spaces for connection.”

“Breastfeeding provides lifelong health benefits for infants and mothers,” said Minister of Health, Kim Wilson. “This week encourages our community to learn, support, and celebrate the diverse breastfeeding journeys of families across Bermuda.”

The spokesperson said, “Events throughout the week include:

August 4 – Documentary Screening: The Milky Way 5:30 PM, Bermuda College – Athene Lecture Theatre. A thought provoking film exploring real breastfeeding experiences and global perspectives.

August 5 – Private Class: The Art of Hand Expressing 5:00 PM, Treehouse – Registration Required. A hands on session facilitated by Feven Binega Northcott of Harmony Birth Services.

August 6 – Panel Discussion: Breastfeeding: One Size Does Not Fit All 5:30 PM, Bermuda College – Athene Lecture Theatre. Healthcare professionals and mothers share diverse experiences. Panelists include Dr. Kristen Woodward, Nicole Harvey, Fiona Dill, and three mothers. Moderator: Allison Flood.

August 8 – Community Event: Rooted in Support 9:00–11:30 AM, Victoria Park. A morning of learning and connection featuring a used breast pump donation drive, free movement class, mini sessions, vendors, and activities for families—from moms to grandmothers, and dads supporting moms.”

“Creating supportive environments, whether through education, breastfeeding friendly spaces, or community engagement, helps mothers feel confident and empowered,” added Minister Wilson.
