Masterworks Adds Five New Works To Collection

The Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art has added five new works to its permanent collection with support from donors and the Bermuda Arts Council.

A spokesperson said, “Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is thrilled to announce the addition of five new works to the Masterworks Permanent Collection, made possible with the generous support of our dedicated donors and the Bermuda Arts Council.

“In 2025, Masterworks acquired John Hartman’s The View North from Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse [2024] with the generous support of Mary Ellen Snow, Family and Friends in memory of Joseph Snow. Hartman is a Canadian contemporary painter who specialises in aerial landscapes. His artistic engagement with Bermuda dates to a 2005 visit, when he was particularly inspired by the sweeping vantage point from Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse. In 2024, on the occasion of the exhibition Looking Out: Canadian Artists in Bermuda, Hartman was invited by Masterworks to return to the Island. The View North from Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse was created following this visit

“In 2025 and 2026, Masterworks also acquired two works by celebrated American artist Janet Fish [1938-2025]. Fish was raised in Bermuda, an experience which in part inspired her use of intense light and vivid colour as well as the eclectic range of objects in her still life compositions, many of which harken to her upbringing.

“The first of the two Janet Fish artworks was the centrepiece of the exhibition Janet Fish: Place in Time, Fish’s first-ever exhibition in Bermuda, which opened at Masterworks on November 15, 2025. Parakeet and Tropical Fruit [1991/98] is a visual celebration of Bermuda’s light and colour as well as Fish’s memory of her childhood amidst the Island’s sub-tropical splendour. It was gifted to Masterworks in 2025 by Margot Perot and Family. In Bowl of Onions and Squash [1990], Bermuda onions become a central subject, their purple and white skin explored through Fish’s signature use of light and shadow. This watercolour painting was also on display in Janet Fish: Place in Time. It was gifted to the Museum in 2026 by Lynanne Sharpe Bolton.

“Two further major acquisitions were made possible due to the generous and ongoing support of the Bermuda Arts Council. Both works were on display in recent [2026] Rick Faries Gallery exhibitions.

“The first, entitled Flotsam and Jetsam [2025/26], was created by Bermudian contemporary artist Meg Walters and was on display in her recent exhibition Palimpsest. This layered painting explores impermanence, displacement, and the evolving idea of home through a life lived between Bermuda and Australia. Walters’ work offers a fresh, contemporary perspective on Bermuda’s landscape and material culture.

“The second, by Louisa Bermingham, was on display in her multi-media exhibition A Personal Ecology. Entitled From Sunrise to Sunset [2025], it offers a luminous depiction of Bermuda’s daily rhythms. Bermingham, a contemporary artist and educator based on the Island, weaves together personal and collective history as well as emblems of our community and of our natural world.

“These acquisitions reflect our commitment to “Bermuda as Muse” and to contemporary voices expanding our Island’s art history. We are deeply grateful to the Bermuda Arts Council and the supporters of Masterworks for their generosity. From Sunrise to Sunset will be available to view in the Members’ Lounge in the coming weeks.”
