Update: Jessica Lewis said she is “incredibly proud” after winning Bermuda’s first Commonwealth Games para-athletics medal,

“I’m incredibly proud to bring this bronze medal home to Bermuda,” Lewis told Bernews.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet. I was surprised to finish second in my heat. Going into the final with the fourth-fastest time really lit a fire in me. I wanted to see how well I could do against this incredible group of athletes.

“My coach Geoff [Harris] said, ‘I think there’s a sneaky bronze medal for you.’”

The four-time Paralympian said her race unfolded as planned.

“My race tactics went really well,” she said. “I was starting into a strong headwind, so the plan was to get out fast but stay a little more relaxed so I didn’t burn myself out for the second half of the race when the tailwind hit.

“With 120 metres left, I just put my head down and pushed. I had a lot left in the tank. I thought I was fourth, so it was great to see my name up in the bronze medal position.”
