Investigation Into Reported Rattlesnake Ongoing
Police continue to interview several witnesses as the investigation into the reported rattlesnake sighting remains ongoing.
In response to a request for an update, a police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service continues to interview several witnesses, as the investigation into this matter continues. That investigation is currently at a delicate stage. As such, it would not be prudent to provide any further detail at this time.”
On June 26th, the Government announced that it was investigating a reported possible rattlesnake sighting near Gibbs Hill Road in Southampton and over the next few weeks the appropriate antivenom arrived in Bermuda, and a US-based specialist search team arrived with two trained detection dogs.
On July 29th, the government said that “following extensive investigations, no evidence has been found to indicate the presence of a rattlesnake in the reported search area.”
In a statement at that time, a Government spokesperson said, “The search operation drew on local and overseas expertise and included a range of precautionary measures. Despite these efforts, no evidence was found to support the presence of a rattlesnake in the reported area.
“While no evidence has been identified to date, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will continue to monitor the situation and investigate any credible sightings or reports that may emerge. The Ministry remains committed to protecting public safety and responding promptly should new information become available.
“The information received at the outset of the incident, together with all related findings, continues to be reviewed by the relevant agencies as part of the ongoing assessment.”
