The Bermuda SPCA announced a “new chapter for TheraTails, its established animal assisted therapy programme, welcoming a new clinical team while continuing its focus on the connection between people and shelter animals.”

A spokesperson said, “TheraTails supports children and adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, attachment difficulties and emotional regulation challenges. Animals can provide a calming, non-judgemental presence, helping participants develop trust, connection and emotional regulation skills in a safe and supportive environment. During sessions, shelter animals may participate for all or part of the therapeutic work, helping participants practise these skills alongside a qualified psychologist.

“Joining the programme are Dr. Cherita Rayner, PsyD, a Registered Psychologist with 21 years of post-qualification experience, and Dr. Annisha Peets, PhD, CPsychol, CCTP, CATP, a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society with more than 20 years of experience working with children and families. Together, they bring extensive experience in areas including trauma, attachment, emotional regulation and a range of therapeutic approaches.

“Working alongside the clinical team is Bermuda SPCA staff member Niki-Anna Cox-Rennalls, who holds a degree in Animal, Poultry and Veterinary Science and brings knowledge of animal care, behaviour and welfare. Her familiarity with the shelter animals helps ensure positive interactions for both participants and animals.

“A unique aspect of TheraTails is that the benefits go both ways. Many of the animals involved are awaiting permanent homes, and the programme provides them with valuable human interaction, socialisation and enrichment while helping build confidence and trust.”

April Augustus, Executive Director of the Bermuda SPCA, said: “Earlier in my career, I spent many years overseas working with mental health clients, where I saw firsthand the importance of trust, connection and a safe, supportive environment. That experience is one of the reasons TheraTails is particularly meaningful to me.

“What I find so special about TheraTails is the connection that can develop between a participant and an animal. While our participants are building confidence, trust and emotional skills, our shelter animals are also receiving valuable attention, enrichment and socialisation. For animals waiting for a home, those positive experiences with people are incredibly important.

“We recognise and appreciate the work of those who established and developed TheraTails over the years, and we are excited to welcome Dr. Rayner and Dr. Peets as we begin this next chapter. We are also incredibly grateful to our donors, whose generosity helps make it possible for us to provide TheraTails at no cost to participants.”

A spokesperson added, “TheraTails sessions are provided free of charge to participants. Where applicable health insurance coverage is available, it can help support the cost of providing the programme, but insurance is not required to participate.

“For more information about the TheraTails programme, including participation or referrals, please contact Chrysalis Bermuda at admin@chrysalisbermuda.com or 232-7753, or the Bermuda SPCA at info@spca.bm or 236-7333.”
