Bermuda Marks World Mental Health Day

The Ministry of Health joins communities around the world in observing World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2026, under the international theme,“Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”

A Government spokesperson said, “The theme recognises that people who have experienced mental health challenges bring valuable knowledge and expertise and should have a meaningful role in shaping mental health services, policies and decisions.

“In Bermuda, the Ministry continues to strengthen mental health promotion, suicide prevention, anti-stigma initiatives and youth mental health supports, while working with community partners to ensure mental health remains a shared community priority. This work includes promoting early support, strengthening awareness and prevention, and helping residents connect with the information, services and resources they need.”

Minister of Health Kim Wilson said: “This year’s theme reminds us that listening must lead to action. People with lived experience bring valuable knowledge about what works, where barriers exist and where change is needed. We have a responsibility to ensure their voices are not only heard, but reflected in the way we shape mental health services, supports and policies in Bermuda. When we listen to one another with compassion and without judgement, we help build a healthier and more connected community.”

A Government spokesperson added, “As part of World Mental Health Day activities, the Ministry hosted a virtual community event on October 7 focused on real voices and lived experiences. The event highlighted the importance of community connection and creating safe spaces where people can speak openly about mental health, share their experiences and help reduce stigma.

“The Ministry will also collaborate with the Bermuda Mental Health Foundation during its Steps to Mental Wellness 5K Walk and Wellness Fair on October 10 at the Botanical Gardens. Ministry representatives will participate in the walk and host a vendor table at the Wellness Fair, providing information and connecting members of the public with mental health resources and supports.

“The Ministry will also support the Breakout Youth Mental Health Summit, taking place October 13–15 at Warwick Camp. Under the theme “THIS IS MY PLACE,” the Summit will explore how home, school and community shape young people’s mental health, belonging and sense of safety. Students will also be equipped with practical tools to support resilience, healthy relationships and digital wellbeing, as well as guidance on knowing when and how to ask for help.

“World Mental Health Day is also an opportunity for everyone to play a role. Residents are encouraged to check in on family, friends, colleagues and neighbours, listen without judgement, talk openly about mental health and seek support when it is needed. Creating a mentally healthier community begins with making space for people to feel heard, respected and supported.

“For general questions or non-emergency mental health support, please call 249-3432. For urgent mental health concerns, call 239-1111. In an emergency, please call 911.

“Together, these initiatives reflect the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that mental health remains a community priority and that the voices of people with lived experience help shape the services, supports and conversations that affect their lives. By listening, learning and acting together, we can turn real voices into real change.”
