Gherdai Hassell Wins Black Futures Art Award
Bermudian artist Gherdai Hassell has won the Art and Culture Award at the Black Futures Awards 2026, receiving the recognition at Manchester Museum.
Sharing the news on Instagram, the talented artist said, “With absolute gratitude, I am the winner of the Black futures Art and Culture Award, awarded at @mcrmuseum
“Still awed that I get to wake up everyday and do what I feel like I’ve been called to do. When you walk in alignment , your path is made clear. I am proof of this. I’d like to thank @theblackfutures for this recognition and all of the other fellow nominees for the work they are doing in the community…my family and friends for their support.”
The awards were held on October 2 during the UK’s Black History Month, recognising contributions by Black individuals, leaders and organisations across Greater Manchester.
The organisers’ website says the awards “spotlight community impact, leadership, creativity, and enterprise within the Black community.”
Ms Hassell was announced as a finalist in September, with organisers highlighting her international exhibitions, British Council fellowship connected to the Venice Biennale and work delivering workshops for refugee families with Manchester Art Gallery.
