WindReach On Human, Nature, & Animal Bond
WindReach is highlighting its Clinical Mental Health Programme, which “combines evidence-based psychotherapy with experiential, nature-based interventions to support individuals facing mental health challenges.”
A spokesperson said, “The human-animal bond has long been recognized for its powerful ability to provide comfort, connection and emotional support. During life’s most difficult moments, healing can sometimes begin in the quiet presence of an animal, whose natural instincts and calming nature offer reassurance where traditional therapeutic approaches may not always be the best fit.
“For nearly 30 years, WindReach has recognised the significant role that animals and the natural environment play, both therapeutically and educationally, in supporting, encouraging and managing a wide range of diverse support needs. This long-standing understanding continues to shape every aspect of WindReach’s work.
“At WindReach, this connection is at the heart of the Clinical Mental Health Programme, which combines evidence-based psychotherapy with experiential, nature-based interventions to support individuals facing mental health challenges.
“Led by WindReach’s Executive Director and Equine Specialist, Kate Terceira, in collaboration with Clinical Psychologist Dr. Laura Henagulph of Seaglass Consulting, the programme offers a unique, person-centered approach to mental health care within WindReach’s peaceful and therapeutic environment.”
“At WindReach, our holistic, person-centered approach to therapy has been hugely beneficial to participants,” said Kate Terceira. “We have a uniquely peaceful, therapeutic environment where participants feel safe and supported. For those who find traditional therapies constraining, WindReach leaves them free to move and to heal in their own way.”
A spokesperson added, “Unlike conventional clinical settings, WindReach provides opportunities for participants to engage in therapeutic activities that encourage observation, reflection and connection. Whether through interacting with animals, creating art, nurturing plants or simply experiencing the stillness of nature, each activity forms part of a carefully structured therapeutic process.
“The programme’s clinical interventions are grounded in evidence-based, short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, adapted from mentalisation-based models. Working collaboratively, experienced specialist practitioners and Dr. Henagulph deliver individually tailored interventions, with two therapists supporting each client.
“This multidisciplinary approach enables WindReach to work with individuals who may have struggled to engage with traditional services, including those experiencing significant trauma, difficulties with trust, developmental disorders, complex behavioral challenges or prolonged social isolation.
“Each participant receives a clinical assessment, ongoing progress monitoring and outcome reporting conducted by a licensed psychologist, ensuring that therapeutic interventions remain responsive to individual needs.
“Importantly, WindReach recognizes that mental health challenges rarely affect one individual alone. Families, friends and caregivers often carry an enormous emotional responsibility, sometimes with limited access to support for their own well-being.”
“Taking care of one person’s mental health benefits the whole system around them,” explained Dr. Henagulph. “Having worked with the extremes of behavioral disorders, I recognize the unsung heroes of society: the grandparents, cousins, neighbours and friends who step up when everything is falling apart. Although their quiet, consistent care is invaluable, there are few provisions specifically for them.”
A spokesperson added, “Looking ahead, WindReach hopes to expand its Clinical Mental Health Programme to include a weekly guided caregiver support group incorporating equine-assisted therapy.”
“Caregivers can themselves experience care: a place where they are heard, validated and supported by group members and by the clinical team,” added Dr. Henagulph. “We also hope to develop the capacity to offer a forensic mental health service in the future.”
A spokesperson added, “As the need for accessible and responsive mental health services continues, WindReach’s Clinical Mental Health Programme offers an alternative pathway to healing, particularly for individuals whose needs may not be fully met through conventional therapeutic settings.
“By combining clinical expertise with the restorative qualities of animals, nature and meaningful human connection, WindReach continues to build on nearly three decades of experience, demonstrating that healing does not always have to take place within four walls. Sometimes, it begins with a quiet moment, a trusting relationship and the freedom to simply be.
