Cardiff had led 3-0 at half-time through a Jack Moylan hat-trick, but West Ham recovered after the break in Scott Parker’s first match in charge.
Trott saved an early effort from Taty Castellanos before Moylan opened the scoring in the 11th minute. The Cardiff midfielder added a penalty in the 37th minute and headed in his third two minutes later.
Parker made substitutions at half-time, and Divine Mukasa began the comeback in the 58th minute, lifting the ball over Trott after a pass from Jarrod Bowen.
Arne Engels reduced the deficit seven minutes later, finishing after Joël Piroe flicked on Bowen’s pass. Max Kilman then converted Bowen’s cross in the 82nd minute to bring West Ham level.
The visitors continued to threaten, but Trott’s late save from Souček’s header ensured Cardiff finished with a point against his former club.
