10 Year Old Dominates Florida Swim Meet

June 29, 2010

Ten year old Mitch Gariepy put on a performance at a Florida swim meet that was nothing short of dominating; winning five medals in total, three gold and two silver. The young swimmer was part of a twenty strong team sent by the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) to the Coral Springs Swim Club (CSSC) Long Course Invitational Swim Meet in Florida this past week. The event saw over 500 swimmers competing.

Mitch entered seven events, which was the maximum number of events permitted for the meet, where he made the finals of each event, and won five medals in total as well as an overall trophy.

The ten year old is a student of Somersfield Academy, and is the son of Louis and Theresa Gariepy. He has been swimming for four years, and when we asked what his plans are for swimming in the future, he smiled and said “to go far”.

Also representing Bermuda were; Josh Irvine, Somer Froud, Anna Harrington, Shannon Hassell, Erica Hawley, Erin Haydon, Shannon Botelho, Eric Rowse, Tyler Smith, Jesse Washington, Michelle Caza, Sophie Froud, Kiante Lightbourne, Philip Hagen, Jordan Rowse, Alexander Brown, Kellan DeSilva and Nick Patterson. Sophie Froud also put on a great performance and brought home a medal; winning a bronze in the 50 metre backstroke.

All of these swimmers had to meet the required standard in each event in order to be accepted to compete, and are all exceptional athletes in their own right. The team is pictured below at the airport tonight [June 28]
