MPs Debating Wiretapping Bill

June 18, 2010

This morning [June 18] in the House of Assembly, MPs are debating the ‘wiretapping’ bill, which could allow the Police to intercept electronic communications in order to combat our growing crime rate. The bill would require Telecommunication companies to set install equipment to facilate Police intercepting their communication lines, and those in default could be fined thousands of dollars per day.

At present, there is the ability for Police to tap lines, however they must first seek permission from the Governor, who can give permission under a number of grounds including issues of defence and public safety.

Details about the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement is below, click full screen for greater clarity.
