Bermuda Win 17 Medals: Highest Ever Tally

The Bermuda National swimming team has finished competing at the 2010 Caribbean Island Swimming Championships in Cuba, and put on a performance that saw them earn 17 medals in total, Bermuda’s highest ever medal haul at the Caribbean Games.

They won 7 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals combined, with the top local swimmer being Kiera Aitken who won 5 medals in total, 4 gold and set a new Caribbean record as well. In her international debut for Bermuda, Lisa Blackburn did the island proud winning 4 medals in total, 3 being gold.

On the final day of competition Kiera Aitken was in superb form adding 2 more gold medals to her tally. She won the girls 18 & over 200m backstroke in a time of 2:20:00 and the 100m freestyle in a time of 0:58.33. Lisa Blackburn also added to another gold medal, this time in the girls 18 & over 200m breaststroke. Rebecca Sharpe also continued to push Kiera as she was once again 2nd to her by winning silver in the 200m backstroke in a time of 2:25.38.

Morgan Hopkins was finally able to reach the podium, winning a bronze in the girls 15 to 17 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:57.00. Roy-Allan Burch narrowly missed the podium by placing 4th in the signature event, the boys 18 & over 100m freestyle in a time of 0:53.41. Emma Franklin had the same fate in the girls 13&14 100m backstroke in a time of 1:13.61. She also swam in the final of the 100m freestyle and placed 8th in a time of 1:08.45.

Other finalists for the evening were Eleanor Gardner in the girls 18 & over 100m freestyle placing 8th in a time of 1:04.26 and Julian Fletcher in the boys 18 & over 200m breaststroke finishing in a time of 2:37.67, good for 7th place.

In the final event of the night the quartet of Rebecca Sharpe, Lisa Blackburn, Kiera Aitken and Eleanor Gardner won bronze in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay in a time of 4:09.65, which sets a new Bermuda Open record. This was the second relay Bermuda record set, as they had previously shattered the old record by a staggering 17 seconds in the 4 x 100m medley relay.
