Premier Meets Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Premier Dr Ewart Brown, who is presently in South Africa attending the FIFA World Cup, had the opportunity to meet one of the most iconic figures in South Africa; Archbishop Desmond Tutu. They are pictured below at the Cape Town airport just before his flight took off for Johannesburg, where the Premier will witness the World Cup final on Sunday.

Desmond Tutu, whose name is intricately linked with South Africa’s human rights struggle, rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism, the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2005 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

The first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, he is widely regarded as “South Africa’s moral conscience”. The 78 year old Archbishop has been described by Nelson Mandela as “sometimes strident, often tender, never afraid and seldom without humour, Desmond Tutu’s voice will always be the voice of the voiceless”.

    I am so proud of the Premier for taking advantage of yet another photo opportunity on his farewell tour. He is going to have quite a photo gallery to display after he is done plunging Bermuda into record levels of debt! Congrats!

    Just wondering who is ffoting the bill for this excursion?!? I think a trip wo watch footbal is clearly a trip of leisure and should be paid for by Dr. Brown himself……here’s to betting you and I are paying for it!
