20 Years Later: Bermuda’s Record Still Stands

Following the conclusion of the high jumping competition at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, Bermuda still holds the record, with Clarence “Nicky” Saunders record-breaking leap still unbroken after twenty years.

One of Bermuda’s legendary athletes, Mr Saunders set a new record at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand, becoming the first Bermudian to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

His jump of 2.36 metres [7 foot 8 9/10 inches] placed both Mr Saunders and Bermuda in the record books, where we remain twenty years later.

Earlier this week Donald Thomas of the Bahamas claimed gold in the high jump with a leap of 2.32 metres, with fellow Bahamian Trevor Barry clinching the silver. This gave the Bahamas a nice dinstinction of their own; marking the first time in either the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games or the World Championships that the Bahamas won two medals in one event.
