Tourist Confronts Intruder at Fairmont Hamilton

November 22, 2010

bermuda-hotelAround 3:30am today [Nov 22], Police responded to a report of a burglary at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel.

The Police say that it appears that around 3:15am an unknown culprit gained entry into a guest room and was confronted by the occupants. The intruder escaped after a scuffle with the 67 year old American male visitor in the room, who received minor injuries to his arm, however medical treatment was not required. His wife, a 65 year old American woman, was not injured.

The surrounding area was thoroughly searched by officers however the burglar was not located. The suspect is described as a dark skinned male approximately 5’10” tall with blotches on his face wearing a green T-shirt, tan coloured pants and sneakers.

Police are following all possible lines of inquiry regarding this matter. Any witnesses or anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.

The Police say “While not ruling anything out, it is too early to say whether this incident may be linked to any similar burglaries.” Last month, three tourists were hospitalized after being injured in two separate robbery incidents at the Grotto Bay and Wharf Hotels.

The Police have cautioned the general public saying “Residents & visitors alike are reminded that all windows and doors should be locked before leaving their property/guest property unattended, even for short periods of time. Also, before retiring to bed at night all windows & doors should be locked; valuables should be kept secure and out of sight. In addition, the public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities or individuals to Police on 295-0011.”

Update 5:25pm: When asked by Bernews for a statement Jonathan Crellin, General Manager of The Fairmont Hamilton Princess, said “I can confirm that an unidentified man gained access to a guest room early this morning. We are disappointed this happened to one of our guests and we are working with the Bermuda Police Service who is investigating the incident.”

Update 6:47pm: Per the latest Police notification, they now say that it appears nothing was taken from the room

The key to this matter is……….

  2. Call as it is says:

The Hotel HAS security Officers 24/7 and Security Cameras,
this guy should have been stopped and detained.

    • Dear Call as it is says:

The Fairmont Hamilton Princess does have robust security measures in place on the property to ensure that our guests are safe. We’re really disappointed that one of our guests experienced this, but we are pleased that no one was injured. As there is a current police investigation underway, we are unable to respond further.

  3. terry says:

You sure can “call it”. Security cameras yes but not in rooms. By the time the crime has been committed the guy is gone. People in hallways et al are on monitor…never mind.

  4. Call as it is says:

terry,I knew it wouldn’t be long before you remarked some drivel.

  5. CanadianLuv says:

This is both scary and absurd! I stayed at the Hamilton princess on my last trip to Bermuda and i felt safe even at 4 am. Not anymore..

  6. Nicole says:

Unlike it’s sister hotel, The Fairmont in Hamilton got to keep their Princess due to historical reasons. One day the media will actually get the names of the two hotels correct.

Other than that I think it’s sad that criminals have become so brazen in Bermuda today. I’m glad the guest wasn’t hurt.

  7. terry says:

Hey man…I call it as I see it. Drivel and all.

  8. Mohawk says:

Should I bring pepper spray with me next time I stay at the hotel?

  9. fergie says:

These thugs appear to be “No Minds”who do not care about the future welfare of Bermuda. If this man is ever caught a long jail term would be better than a slap on the hand.

    • Shopper says:

Unfortunately, that requires a change in legislation, because the courts- as much criticism as they richly deserve- can only portion out what the law permits. That said, Fergie- I couldn’t agree more. I do think that crimes against tourists need to be punished especially hard. And I’m no prude, but I wish we would enforce our anti-profanity laws. A tourist can hear the f-bomb dropped in NY or London. Here? It is just an assault to the ears. Unnecessary and not at all classy or ‘tough’ sounding. Just sounds stupid and ignorant, and shows a total lack of creativity if THAT has to pepper your speech. If we are supposed to be in our platinum period of tourism (don’t laugh, I hear you…), then we are displaying little more than manure for our tourists. The best insults I’ve ever heard have nothing to do with profanity, and I for one am sick and tired of hearing our people sound like those in large urban centers, f’ing this and f’ing that…We lose more of who we are every day with words like that. Why can’t we just be us? Why do we have to emulate everything that, traditionally, we’re not?

Whoops, didn’t mean to digress. But what I will say that is if we, Bermuda’s people, believe that a law has to change, it’s up to us to put the pressure on our politicians to amend the legislation. So, whilst this is an excellent forum for venting and sharing, let’s turn the heat up where it will make a difference. And before anyone gets all over me for ‘sounding’ a ‘certain’ way…I am Bermudian and I do support the PLP.

  10. Brasco says:

WE NEED CRACK HEAD PATROLS!!!……I noticed a new crack-ish looking guy in the Cedar Hill area on saturday and sunday pushin a lawn mower…Just seemed weird that he wasn’t carrying extra gas)..If I was a Police Officer I would have asked him, what you doing in my neighborhood….but wait, that would be intruding on his civil rights huh?

Oh Well, same ol same ol…..

  11. Truth is killin' me says:

And both times it was a different looking lawn mower!!!

  12. terry says:

@ Mowhawk…lock you door with the safety chain et al. Then again, we don’t know the full details. Either that, stay at the Club Med in St. George.

  13. Wild and Out says:

Well, maybe they should check out the after hour gang down at Albouy’s point for a starter! But never the less we are looking for someone with blotches so keep an eye out, pretty sure he won’t have enough sense to cover those up.

  14. We’d like to note that we have a security team in place who responded promptly to this incident. This is an unfortunately incident, and we would encourage all guests to exercise vigilance in ensuring that doors and windows are secure. The hotel’s team is cooperating fully with the Bermuda Police Service in its investigation.

  15. Jman says:

Maybe Fairmont Hamilton needs to have the security guards check the guests at the front door, and get alarm buttons in the room, with the prices that people pay to come to Bermuda and pay for your hotel, PR Fairmont director, you need to improve your services.

  16. terry says:

Jman, do you really think that “alarm buttons” are needed. I don’t think so. There is a phone which one can use to call front desk et al.

If things are that bad ( which they are not) Fairmont has to install ‘Panic Buttons’?

Please. Sh#t happens. Would you stay in a hotel that had “panic buttons”.

As I stated prior here or on another headline by Bernews…………..never mind. Just read Bernews, juggel and see what you come up with.

And read what the PR Director said. Actually I brought it up about an unlocked door et al.

    Tink man tink………………………

    • Call as it is says:

Terry.the self appointed watchdog of Bernews always likes to have the last say

  17. Icarus says:

…. yet to hear the Hotel actually APOLOGISE for the incident. Calling the incident ‘unfortunate’ and being ‘disappointed’ is hardly remorseful.

  18. Rodrigo Salaam says:

This is sad indeed. I am not sure who the owners of the Hotel are (probably in foreclosure like every other hotel), but they need to fortify the security of the Hotel and its grounds. I was stabbed and nearly killed by a mugger not far from this property 6 months ago. Just now have recovered.
