[Updated] Bermuda’s U20 World Cup qualifying team lost their first of two matches against Long Island Rough Riders yesterday [Dec 27] at Wellington Oval.

Under very windy conditions, the visiting Long Island Rough Riders took the lead early in the first half, as Shane Arikian’s right footed shot beat Corey Richardson to his right in the 6th minute. In the 37th minute Errin Simons equalized for the Bermuda Under 20 National Team, however two minutes later Dominick Sarle put the visitors up 2 – 1. [short video here]

Head coach, Gary Darrell said: “This can be used as a positive going forward for Bermuda. Thought our overall performance was consistent through out the entire match. However, the game gave me an opportunity to see new players. These players were not selected in the previous team. Come Saturday, we will once again see other players returning from school during the Christmas holiday.” Aside from that, as the game went on the Rough Riders showed their experience.” As soon as we scored, they came back with the go ahead goal. They showed composure, determination and hard work which gave them their second goal.”

The U-20 team will play their second match this coming Saturday [Jan 1] at Somerset Cricket Club starting at 2:30pm.

In my days at Somerset Cricket Club(77-79), any time we had teams come in from the U.S. we spanked all of them. With the likes of Tyrone Simonds Boogie Brangman, Anthony Bailey, Robert Goodchild…..We had a pretty damn good team. Teams came in from colleges, Rutgers, Lehigh University. I know it is a totally different reality today but those were some great teams “The Trojans” were great.

Good team maybe, great is a major stretch. FYI – Great = Richard Simmons, George Brangman, Clyde Best and yes Bumla Bell…

I attended high school in NJ during that era and Rutgers were very average and Lehigh less than. They didn’t get mentioned in the same breath as the top US colleges such as Clemson, Hartwick, Howard, SIU, Phila Textile & St Louis…

Absolutely correct Sam.. I saw The GREAT, The SUPERB, The BRILLIANT Dale Russell play for Phila Textile against some of the top colleges in the US and I can assure you that Somerset, circa A Bailey and co would have had no chance against that lot. Russell alone would have score 4.. He was that good.

When you discuss greatness in the mid to late seventies you must immediately mention Dale Russell, John Nusum, Punchy Dill, Callderon Twins, Richard Simmons and although he was not the most technically gifted player, Bumla Bell was near impossible to stop. The late Cecil Todd was no slouch either…

The Seventies was the last great Era in Bermuda football. I am from Jamaiaca and it only took one game for me to become a Village fan. I couldn’t believe the talent that Bermuda had. Amazing based on the size of the country. Saw Village versus a combined Jamaican club team at national stadium in 1973.. What a game. Village I believe won 3-1, however the football played that day by both teams was a joy to watch…
