102nd Birthday Celebrations Continue

February 17, 2011

As reported earlier on Bernews, Bermuda’s oldest retired police officer, former Detective Inspector Milton Murray Marsh, celebrated his 102 birthday at his home in Pembroke today [Feb 17]. He was visited by Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva and Deputy Commissioner Michael Jackman this morning, and he continued to have a stream of visitors during the day including Governor Sir Richard Gozney, retired Commissioner Fred “Penny” Bean, and members of the Bermuda Ex-Police Officer’s Association.

Mr Marsh is pictured below with Governor Sir Richard Gozney, who stopped by to extend his birthday wishes:

This afternoon he was presented with a birthday cake by Steve Taylor, President of the Ex-Police Officer’s Association, together with Roger Sherratt, Reese Bartley and Dave Cook from the Association. Roger Sherratt had been interviewing Mr. Marsh in recent months about his reminiscences of life in the Bermuda Police which are due to be published on a website being created by the Bermuda Ex-Police Officer’s Association.

Mr. Sherratt told the Bermuda Sun, “Milton has been a pleasure to interview. He has a remarkable memory and was able to provide tremendous insight into life as a policeman, particularly a policeman of West Indian origin, during the 1940’s through 1960’s. Milton was especially proud of the team of young Bermudian detectives who worked under him as a Detective Inspector. These included Maurice “Syke” Smith, Fred “Penny” Bean, Hubert Simmons, and Sinclair Bean. Milton was in fine form today, and I know that we all thoroughly enjoyed celebrating this special day with our senior police retiree.”

Also celebrating the day with Mr. Marsh were his daughter, Blanche Marsh who flew in specially from Florida, and his grandson Jonathan Marsh who flew in from Boston, Mass. along with his partner Crystal and their 9 month old daughter, Cyriell.
