Video: Centre on Philanthropy’s Open House

February 17, 2011

The Governor Sir Richard Gozney, Minister of Public Information Services Neletha Butterfield and Senator David Burt, on behalf of Premier Paula Cox, were amongst the dignitaries attending The Centre on Philanthropy’s Open House at Sterling House in Hamilton this morning [Feb 17].

The Centre’s chairman, Brian Madeiros welcomed them and some of The Centre’s most generous supporters to a special breakfast engagement.

Noting the significance of the new Wesley Street premises Mr. Madeiros said the more central location will allow Bermuda’s charities, nonprofits, donors and volunteers greater access to The Centre’s services.

“We’re excited to welcome people to our new home,” said Mr. Madeiros. “Being centrally located means our stakeholders and the general community can more readily stop by and make use the resources we have at hand.”

The Centre is home to The Bank of Bermuda Foundation Third Sector Resource Centre and The Third Sector Training Centre, both of which are designed to support and increase the effectiveness of Bermuda’s charitable sector. The Centre also runs Volunteer.bm, a website dedicated to connecting charities and volunteers in Bermuda.

“The Training Centre allows us to run our workshops, lunch and learns and evening sessions from a central location,” said Executive Director Pamela Barit Nolan. “Our Resource Centre is essentially a library of information for charities, donors and volunteers. We have a check out system for the publications, or people can stop by have a cup of coffee and browse.”

The Open House is also a homecoming for The Centre. In 1991 they began operating from a single desk in Sterling House. Since then they have operated from various locations, most recently Charities House.

“We’re very happy to be back in Hamilton, and in time for our 20 year anniversary,” continued Ms Barit Nolan. “Obviously we’ve grown a lot in the last two decades but our mission remains the same – to support Bermuda’s charities, donors and volunteers through training, education and information.”

Located on the Ground Floor of Sterling House at 16 Wesley Street, The Centre is open from 9am – 5pm on weekdays.
