Dunkley: Premier’s Words More Of The Same

April 25, 2011

Shadow Minister of Public Safety Senator Michael Dunkley responded to the Premier’s address saying her “comments on Thursday night again rang hollow as Bermudians have seen countless past promises made by this government with little delivery.”

The Premier started off her speech on Thursday night [Apr.21] by mentioning the four men who have been murdered so far in 2011, and expressed her commitment to stemming the rising crime.

Premier Cox said the “full weight of the partnership between the Legislature and the Bermuda Police Service” will used, and Cabinet will shortly “consider legislation making gang membership an offence.” She also spoke on broadening the scope of proceeds of crime laws, and considering incentives for those that turn in guns.

“The PLP Government have a dismal record in the area of Public Safety,” said Senator Dunkley.

“They have been too slow off the mark to meet the challenges we face as a community and now in the grips of unprecedented gun violence, against the backdrop of significant cuts in the police budget, the Premier continues to talk about doing things. This is just not good enough. People want action, they are tired of talk.”

Responding to the Premier’s statement that Cabinet will consider legislation to make gang membership illegal, Senator Dunkley said, “The comment by the Premier that gang legislation will be considered is just another glaring example of being slow off the mark and out of touch with what our community is experiencing and feeling.”

“Policy to combat gang and gun violence has been repeatedly suggested by the Opposition since the last election and even before the election we proposed a tough anti-crime strategy which the PLP criticized and disparaged. It is not good enough now for the Premier to talk about solutions after many families have suffered and the island’s image damaged due to the scourge of gun and gang violence.”

“How can these comments by the Premier be taken seriously in light of the fact that both she and former Premier Brown last year said ‘Enough is enough” without any resolute follow-on action. We can only see the Premier’s words on Thursday as more of the same until proven otherwise. There is too much history with this Government of complacency and inattention to think otherwise,” concluded Senator Dunkley.

Blah blah blah. Like this guys any better?!

    • sandgrownan says:

So you think the Premier’s spech was uplifting and meaningful? What examples can you give of the PLP acting quickly and decisively over any “hot topic” facing the island?
What is the PLP’s record of success with crime and the economy? How will the pensions shortfall be addressed? How do you feel about the lies about free ferries? What tangible steps have been legislated by this government to address gang violence?

“True Bermudian”, Sir, you are an idiot.

      • True Bermudian says:

“Sand GrowNads” If you think the milkman can deliver anything but curdled cream covered in sugar coated cow dung you, Sir, are the real idiot.

        • sandgrownan says:

          You would.

        • sandgrownan says:

What specifically, in Dunkley’s comment’s doesn’t ring true? I’m interested in just how far from reality you live.
Just answer the question. How about some PLP success stories…come on…just one…

          • Think about it says:

I agree with sandgrownman. In the past 13 years I cannot recall the PLP doing one thing that has greatly or even moderately helped improve Bermuda.

          • Accepting the Challenge says:

Future Care – Upgraded Hospital Insurance Plan (HIP) to cover major medical expenses for seniors
Child Care – Free Day Care services for Bermudian Families
Public Transport – Free Bus and Ferry Services
Education – Free Bermuda College for all Bermudians
Housing – 500 Interest free down payments for first time Bermudian home owners

            • sandgrownan says:

And the cost for that little lot is….??

here’s hte thing..could’ve been affordable had they not completely mismanaged everything else.

Free buses and ferries mean nothing if THEY ARE ALL CANCELLED.

            • LOL (original) says:

The last one is the only one that has indeed helped the rest were altered election promises that the PLP did what the UBP stated in their election platform.

              LOL

    • T says:

I agree with you True Bermudian!!!

  2. sigh says:

Who is the real leader of the UBP? Every night Michael Dunkley is on tv speaking on some issue. We havent seen Kim Swan in weeks/months. Nor Craig Cannonier.
Is this a prelude for their merger?

Seems to me Michael Dunkley is the defacto leader of the UBP.

Kim, they are treating you like they treated Wayne!

    • sandgrownan says:

Way to go to avoid addressing the content. Idiot.

    • Todd says:

“Shadow Minister of Public Safety Senator Michael Dunkley” You will notice he made a point of responding the the points pertinent to his responsibility. He is doing his job.
He is on every night due to the fact that Public Safety is an ongoing and imminent issue that needs someone to be working on Yesterday!

      • LOL (original) says:

Yes just like Zane in the other thread he must be working as he is bring the spot light on issues ehh plp zane supporters.

LOL the irony of it all

  3. Empty PLP promises says:

True Bermudian will not answer in regard to PLP successes because there aren’t any. He/she will just reply more insults cos thats all there is to say on the matter. Pathetic really.

  4. Lineage says:

As long as these parties continue throwing stones and competing for the best ‘magic’ show, violence and crime will consistanly rise.

The country is in a serious crisis why the heck aren’t these parties coming together at this CRITICAL POINT? Such a waste of time picking at each others speeches and comments. 2 of the most powerful ‘gangs’ in this country and you mean to tell me the both of you parties can’t just put a freeze on the tricks for a moment, ‘gang’ up as one and clear this mess??

Oh snap! TWILIGHT ZONE! What am i thinking…this is politics…my bad! SMFH!

    • LOL (original) says:

Increase crime I think helps them..
      LOL

  5. Uncle Ruckus says:

“….just another glaring example of being slow off the mark and out of touch with what our community is experiencing and feeling.”

Really? Like Michael Dunkley is any more “in touch” with the community. I agree with ‘Lineage’, all Mr. Dunkley is doing is running his mouth as well. Criticizing each other instead of coming together to solve an issue. All these politicians lie to win your vote. He wouldn’t be any different.

    • sandgrownan says:

Dunkley has, repeatedly, offered suggestions to the party in power – the PLP.
They have been often ridiculed, ignored and met with apathy and well timed speeches. The PLP continue to do nothing. Dunkley is merely pointing the inadequacies of the PLP in power. It’s his job. He’s offered solutions, gonig back before the last election. The PLP have offered nothing.

It’s not about “coming together”, it’s about the PLP getting off their collective fat useless backsides and actually doing something tangible. But they won’t becasue they can’t. Incompetant halfwits.

      • Uncle Ruckus says:

What’s your point? It’s still all talk! I know it’s his job but my point is he won’t do anything different. In order to find a solution you need to know what the problem is.

It doesn’t matter if it’s UBP or PLP, bottom-line. People like Dunkley will say whatever to win your vote and once they’re in it’s a different story. You talk about kool-aid drinkers, you seem to be sipping on it too. What would Michael Dunkley do if he ran this country? Everyone has suggestions, doesn’t mean they will work. He is out of touch himself, what does he know about what’s going on in Bermuda with these young black males? About the average Bermudian struggle, hes just as out of touch. It’s all about greed, money and power. Narcissism. Not for the betterment of the Bermudian people.

In regards to your last sentences Mr. Dunkley said this HIMSELF, “Another challenge in Bermuda today is overcoming the divides in our politics, where ideas proposed by one group are rejected outright by the other side or don’t even register because they come from the other camp……….It means breaking political taboos – such as political parties working hand in hand to solve the challenge.”

I bet he couldn’t do anything either if he was in power. UBP or PLP. Doesn’t matter, this is politricks.

        • sandgrownan says:

Er..he is suggesting and has suggested doing things differently.

          • Uncle Ruckus says:

I heard you the first time. Nice reply smh.

  6. sigh says:

All Dunkley does is try to politicise and capitalise on the community’s misfortune. When there is a shooting, he takes a drive through the neighborhood’s to say he has been there, but he doesnt know the plight of the people. Its all about politics for him. He wants to be Leader again…He is not over his 2007 defeat.

    • sandgrownan says:

You simply cannot get over your dislike of the man to listen towhat he is actually saying. And you talk baout coming together?

      Moron.

  7. Linda says:

The PLP has done such a wonderful job. In 12 short years it has brought this country to its knees. And yet we still have so many purple cool-aid drinkers out there. So sad!!

    • sigh says:

right Linda. Blame the PLP for everythign wrong with Bermuda and the world. have you ever thought that the spending the PLP has done was because the UBP during their reign of terror didn’t invest in hardly any infrastructure. How many homes did they build? What social programs did they implement to help the disaffected? Didn’;t they largely destroy an education system? The PLP is not perfect, but let’s not pretend that everything the PLP has done is wrong, and that the other options represent any sort of hope.

      • sandgrownan says:

        keep drinking the coolaid.

Still blaming the UBP 14 years on…how long do they need?

Tell me something they have done right.

      • Truth says:

None of you PLP supporters have event attempted to address the challenge laid down by “Sandgrownan”. It is pretty shocking really. He has asked a question, in earnest, and all that many on this string have managed to conjure up is insults. insulting someone is an indicator of our inability to directly and effectively deal with an issue at hand.

      • Eyes Wide Open says:

“Spending the PLP has done was because the UBP”
        1. Crazy overspending on TCD project – because of UBP???
        2. Ridiculous overspending on Berkeley project- because of UBP???
        3. Foolish overspending on Beyonce & Friends Music Festival – because of UBP??
        4. Multi-Million dollar Cricket Team – because of UBP???
        5. Poor management leading to unavoidable overspending of our fabulous Dockyard pier – because of UBP??
These are just a few of the examples of overspending costs that we Bermudians have paid for. It’s pretty sad. Our schools need a private contractor to “adopt” them in order for them to be repaired/renovated. Our commuters are being negatively impacted by the (little to no notice) slashing of the bus/ferry routes. Stop sighing and wake up people!! Our current government needs to be held accountable for the state that we are in right now. POINT BLANK PERIOD!!

        • Eyes Wide Open says:

Hope nobody’s catching the number seven bus to Barnes Corner at knock off time! That bus route just got cancelled along with four other routes!!

      • Bob says:

Far from perfect Sigh. I have heard enough of what happened under the UBP. I get it, that’s why we voted them out. But Sigh, in good conscious, can you really continue to give the PLP a Free pass? Seriously, at what point do you wake up to the stark reality that many of us have faced for years now and that simply is that power in the hands of self serving folks, Black or White, UBP or PLP is just bad for most of us. Yes the UBP were negligent in providing affordable housing for middle class and under folks in Bermuda. And guess what Sigh, it took the PLP close to 8 years in power to do anything meaningful in this regard(and one can argue that they haven’t done nearly enough) Operative word being meaningful. The PLP rightly criticized the UBP for building the mega school-CdearBridge, but the PLP build the new Berkely (mega school) and in doing so allow the contractors to go $75 Million over budget. Ok–I get that the Cabinet at the time where largely Berkely Alum., but wasn’t this a direct contradiction in their Philosophy re the mega school? The PLP told us that the sky was falling when the expat workforce was hovering around 18% under the UBP and we all took note. The catchy buzz words being ‘Bermuda For Bermudians.’ Under the PLP didn’t that figure swell to close to 29%? Sky is still up there. The PLP told us that the UBP’s policy on crime was to lock up our young brothers not provide effective programs and education to keep them out. I don’t think anyone would argue that under the PLP we have yet to introduce any programs via education or crime prevention that would reverse the downward spiral. One could argue that under the PLP crime has spiralled out of control , we have more young black men in jail and the close to $1.3 Billion that has been spent on education by the PLP has been a failure.Sigh, the PLP have held the reigns for 13 years now, 13 years! We deserve better and maybe that’s not the UBP but clearly we are failing under the PLP and i haven’t even touched on our economy, unemployment rates and murder rates. I haven’t touched on the fact that the party that promised Black folk so much have failed us on so many levels. One could argue that under this government, the Portuguese contractor has been the biggest benificiary and that’s cool but I guess i believed the rhetoric. The PLP told us that we must break the ties to the mother cuntry and stand on our own two feet. They told us that we must put a nail in the coffin of Colonialism and we listened, but than a funny thing happened we took Independence off the table and yes, yes, they will point to polls etc etc, but didn’t the other guy, John Swan rest his leadership on a referendum on Indepedence. I guess the PLP hierarchy where not as committed. In fact I along with many other PLP supporters got a tad bit concerned when we determined that we had so many anglophiles leading us, accepting all kinds of Queens honours, Dames, O.B.E.’s C.B.E.s and the like. Who F’in knew???? So Sigh I get your frustration with folk slamming the PLP. But what I don’t get is the fodder that the PLP provide them for their canons. The problem Sigh is that for folks like me and those numbers have swelled significantly, we are lost as we can’t imgaine voting UBP but have had our share of the rhetoric and failed promises of the PLP. A friend once told me that there was a very fine line between racism and elitism. I now know what she was referring to.

        • Former PLP Voter says:

          Bang!

        • The 411 says:

          Here Here….very well written.

Thank you for taking the time.

        • Think about it says:

Aren’t you glad we didn’t go independant? Oh, and the Berkeley budget went over by more that 100 million, not 75.

  8. all or nothing says:

At times there seems to be a deliberate attempt by some force or entity to bring Bermuda down. The people can’t get along even in the face of impending economic doom. Look around people, we don’t need another political party, we need a united people. A rich man and a poor man can never think the same way, thus you have so many different views of Bermuda. But some group somewhere is out to take Bermuda out of the heights. Seems we can’t shake the simple things and make decisions. (Sigh). Everyone is out for self.

  9. Terry says:

    I have a dream…………………

Where are the Martin Luther Kings of today.

A great Man, taken too soon.

And quite fittingly applies here to Mr. Dunkley…colour of skin means nothing. Character…if you want to judge.

    A great day to all.

  10. Alicia B says:

Can we get rid of party politricks and focus on the matters at hand by persons in power that truely do give a damn about the plight of the Island and her people (all races & creeds that reside)Enough of the negative critiques on each others speeches and get to damn work.

As far as I’m concerned none of them deserve a 2nd paycheck – there should be no hesitation on a 10% pay cut – you all ain’t doing a damn thing to fix the problems in our community ie. educational system, crime/volence, our ecomony, tourism. Neither party has done better than the last – UBP wasted money just the same (airport, national stadium, middle school catastrophy) the difference is they had more money collectively than the PLP and the PLP was a weak opposition (wanna blame someone – Browne???? – say no more)Let’s pick up the pieces and move forward PEOPLE!!! PLEASE

  11. Linda says:

If the PLP has done such a wonderful job with housing then why are there so many homeless people, if the PLP has do such a wonderful job for it’s people in the way of social programs then why are there more killing, more children being abused, more social ills then ever before and if the PLP has done such a great job with education then why are there more children dropping out of school? UBP were not perfect either but they are the lesser of two evils.

    • sigh says:

Linda, there are people that actually choose to be homeless for various reasons..either lifestyle choices or mental illnesses. The government cannot force people or house every single person. Under the PLP, they have built Loughlands, Harbourview, Perimetre Lane, and the development in Warwick. They built for seniors the Rockaway Trust.
The PLP has instituted Mirrors, provided grants to tons of social agencies. You can not like the PLP (for whatever reason you choose), but to say they havent done anything in these areas is being disingenous at best.

      • Stephen says:

Linda, having a mental illness is not a choice. According to the national coalition for the homeless approximately 20-25% of homeless people suffer from some form of severe and persistent mental illness. http://www.nationalhomeless.org/publications/facts/Mental_Illness.pdf

These people are physically unable to find work, or provide themselves in a meaningful way. As a direct result they are often left to live on the street.

I am not arguing with your point about housing being constructed, but I wanted to bring some clarity for one of the most disadvantaged subsets of our population.

  12. lp says:

To sandgrownan, et al. The PLP in 12 years have done more to enfranchise more of the population, particularly Black Bdians, than the UBP and its predecessor, the 40 Thieves would ever care to admit or be willing to do without some form of protests of suffrage. You want examples? How about the enfranchising Black war vets which the UBP shamefully ignored, building and creating the most affordable housing opportunities in the history of Bda, improvements in basic healthcare, continuous yearly increases in pensions, fair electoral boundaries with one man one vote unlike their stacking games, finally bringing the CoH to the democratic present, etc. It’s amazing how sand and his those of his ilk have such short term memories. How can you sit there and say ‘nothing’ has been done?? C’mon, nothing at all?? Oh, and thank you UBP for destroying our Education system, a big messy inheritance which created an unfortunate generation of disaffected youth. Oh please….

    • sandgrownan says:

More unemployed, more violence, fewer jobs, collapsing housing market, rampant debt, no liquidity, worse race relations, inability to tackle education, basic healthcare? Use of hospitalists? Closure of the “walk in” clinic (good one Ewart), broken buses & ferries….took 12 years, but yeah, more of the population are “enfranchised”. I bet they feel really “enfranchised”.

      • Think about it says:

You forgot increased taxation on almost all fronts. Don’t worry sandgrown, I have your back. I’m not a UBP or PLP supporter, but I do know who the lesser of the two evils are and all Imma say is, the worse of the two has held the thrown for 13 years and going stong….

Also by (Establishment of the Bermuda Race Relations Initiative to discuss race in Bermuda) they on a small level/part have pushed apart the races in some quarters as well.

    • PLP Supporter says:

      Senator

While I am a staunch PLP supporter, I’m also a realist and I look at your list (forgive me if Laverne is not the Senator) and say the following:

There are certain things that are “standard fare” for a standing government. These would include things like the smokers ban, movement to online vehicle registrations and the decreased airfares. There is nothing particularly special about these and which would not have been taken care of by any government of the day in response to demographic and social push.

The particular programs that the PLP keep touting that are really not the great successes as is claimed are the following:

Economic Empowerment Zones. Please name 2 individuals who have benefited under the Zone’s development. Further, refer me to the document which succintly spells out ALL of the benefits of development in the Zone. I’ll help you with that one. The document cannot be had. Frankly, 50% of our population can care less about the development in the zone and a further 40% who once cared, are terrified now to even drive through or pick up lunch in the “Zone”. Not a major policy success is my point. And we have not seen the return on the millions that have been dedicated to it.

African Heritage Diaspora Trail – Not a major policy success. Ask any Bermudian, black or white what it means to them. And the answer is a resounding NOTHING.

      Supplemented Bermuda College tuition
      Geared to Income Housing
      Child Care Allowance Benefits
      Cricket and Football development
      Race Relations Discussions
      No licence fee for seniors

Don’t you get it? All of these “benefits” were not accompanied by increases in revenue. They were costs to us that we are paying for now. These “accomplishments” are not viewed as that by the electorate…They are viewed as waste – unncessary spending – that has us in the position we are in now. The value of the new handbag is not there if the money we were relying on in our annual bonus is not received….to fund it. A total and unnecessary waste.

We can’t measure what cricket and football development or Mirrors has done for our youths…but we can measure how many uneducated boys we have buried, how many fail to graduate due to a poor education system and how many can’t find or are distinterested in finding a job. We have to check the boxes on the issues that materially make a difference and frankly being on the heritage diaspora trail is not one of them.

If the PLP is going to win the next election, we absolutely must focus on the issues that are relevant to the people.

    • sandgrownan says:

laverne, you deluded damsel, you’re not serious?

No smoking…that was a PLP idea? bwaahahahahaa
Millions for cricket & football? bwwwhahaha..how about keeping the aforementioned ferries running WOuld have been a little more responsible eh?

Decreased airfares allowing easier travel to Bermuda!—(Don’t know if the PLP were responsible)

Removal of death tax/inheritance tax on primary homestead!—(Completely false)

Implementation of smoke ban in public places!—(I will admit, good job)

Increased pension benefits for seniors!—(At the cost of everyone else)

Increased doctor’s visits for HIP clients!

Increased an on-line TCD to aid in licensing and registration!—(Does not work correctly)

Implemented geared to income housing for BHC Clients!

Introduced further education awards for mature students and couples, in addition to increasing further education awards across the board!

Pledged millions of dollars for cricket and football to aid youth development!—(And our cricket and football teams are still horrible. What a waste)

Enacted bladed weapons legislation to combat violent crime!—(Criminals have since graduated to guns)

Constructed the reverse osmosis plant to aid in water usage!

Opened the Bermuda Recycling plant for Tin, Aluminum, and Glass!

      Introduced the Environmental Awards Program!

Allowed competition in the telecommunications industry allowing long distance rates to decrease!

Supplmented Tuition for Bermuda College students!—(They are taking this away, so no more free tuition)

Introduced child care benefits for those who qualify

  14. lp says:

And Linda, there is a root cause for most of our social ills which goes further back than 1998, you know that. The UBP introduced an educational system that ensured separation and lessened opportunities. The technical institute of yesteryear WORKED!! It produced many Bdian technicians like plumbers, masons and kept those trade skills alive. Now we have to bring them in from overseas. I remember well when they implemented this god-awful middle school system and the only 2 senior secondary schools when it was predicted then that there will be problems. Well here we are. We are suffering now from that generation of lost youth…. Homelessness and other social ills? Try the inflationary tactics and virtually no regulation from the real estate agencies which helped in this exploding housing pricing bubble and international businesses driving up the costs where foreign workers were favoured with obscene perks over locals (and that’s still the case).

    • crazytalk says:

lp, if having Cedarbridge and Berkeley is the wrong strategy, or the ‘root cause of social ills’ as you put it, the plp have had 12 years to get off their behinds and do something about it. You can’t for all eternity just whine about a previous government that hasn’t been in power for a generation. You’re supposed to be there to manage the situation, not complain forever about the UBP.

And you no longer have to worry about the ‘inflationary tactics’ (whatever that means). You have your way on that now. Foreign workers have been leaving in droves and there are hundreds of empty apartments and houses. There is rent and house-price deflation. Big time.

Snd now you can’t afford to fuel the ferries. You can’t pay bus drivers. You can’t afford resources to control crime. You can’t attract, or even retain, business partners who might invest here and improve employment. You can’t keep hotels open (I mean actual hotels, not property developers).

Laverne’s list is a joke. She boasts about “fast ferries”. Half of them are falling to bits and the other half now have their speed restricted to save fuel. And the timetable has been cut to shreds. So much for that. The whole list is a litany of ineffective nonsense. I see LaVerne didn’t list the millions spent on ineffective overseas consultants, or the millions wasted on music parties.

They don’t want to take a “symbolic” pay cut, but they want the rest of us to do exactly that.

They’re out of touch and out of ideas.

      • Lineage says:

no…in reference to Cedarbridge, when the ubp created introduced or however it goes…we the people KNEW it was going to be a disaster just like a lot of other things and what did WE do?? WE made no stance on the matter…we talked in our living rooms but made no stance AS A PEOPLE.

Now it’s truly revealed that the educational structure and system is hogwash and we start darting at plp?? For real tho?? All this havoc that we are facing today is SOULY plp’s fault?? LMAWO! Then we want our children take responsibilities for their actions??? That will never happen if we continue to always sit around waiting a BETTER tomorrow.

Now I see why our youths have the mentalities that they do. They are growing up watching us rinch our tv screens instead of us organizing, centalizing and coming as one, fighting the real battle of injustices head on. No wonder why they are out here using guns…they know nothing about fighting battles head on virtuously and righteously…SMH!

It’s not about who’s got the most stripes or strikes people….stop it ‘nah’ cuz our youths are grabbing the same mentality…

bbwwahahahaha…it would be funny if it were not so tragic.

  16. Hmmmmm says:

Facists like sandgrownan are so amusing. They thrive on the ignorance of the people and the limited experience of many. No-one with half a brain should be surprised at the violence in Bermuda today. The systematic dismantling of the education system, culminating in the creation of CedarBridge and the unsustainable economy we all endorsed over so many years accounts for where we are today. It is too general a statement to say “it” is/was the UBP’s fault. That gives them too much credit. The unsustainability of an economy that measures success by home ownership alone on a miniscule, finite island by definition means that some folk will never achieve it. The level of frustration that breeds because of what we’ve been taught to believe equals success, then add a little instant gratification fix in there and you have the recipe for social dysfunction. If the PLP made any mistake it was not shaking Bermuda to its core and totally shifting the modus operandi. By simply believing they could improve on the UBP’s performance in the system that they created was just dumb. The system was broken when they got it in 1998 and they haven’t had the courage to fix it. Even now we’re treated to this campaign slogan that “the UBP said the PLP couldn’t run Bermuda” as if having run the UBP’s Bermuda without any change is some achievment! We didn’t need the PLP to keep the UBP’s machinery running well, we needed them do what the UBP refused to do…..empower black people, not with landscaping jobs but with real opportunities that matter in this economy. I am a PLP supporter but I am mature enough to recognize the real shortcomings. Project overspends are only a symptom of the real issue in politics in Bermuda: a lack of courage and boldness, a lack of vision and sadly on both (or all three) sides, a genuine lack of talent, intellectual and otherwise. These guys cannot hold a candle to their Caribbean counterparts who are men and women of learning and who are the best and brightest their countries have to offer. We cannot say that of the 36 MPs and 11 Senators we’re saddled with. Forget about TCD, Berkeley and the cruise dock; re-hashing that stuff will not fix Bermuda. Devote some attention to encouraging some committed, young and bright people to enter politics, then you can rightly hold them accountable for such things because you’ll be sure that they know better. Right now, it just ain’t so.

    • sandgrownan says:

Never been called a fascist before.

The PLP cannot run Bermuda, the evidence is plain to see.

  17. lp says:

Bob I hear what you’re saying and you make some good points. But surely you cannot expect to undo centuries worth of racist policies whose pathologies run extremely deep, in 12 years?! It’s like Obama. First Black president who is now the blame for all the country’s ills that were in place long before his presidency. They blame him for the deficit when the surplus he (Bush) inherited from Clinton was obliterated in one fell swoop by his sham Iraq war which was nothing more than greed for oil! The PLP is not perfect but their intentions have done more to assist our fellow Bdians than any previoius Govt even before party politics. They came in when the bubble was starting to burst. It starts with having a proper education system and providing opportunities for all which the PLP have been trying to do. It takes time. This was rarely a priority for the UBP. I mean they used to have Cab meetings in the RBYC for god’s sakes! That says a lot right there! And regarding Berkeley? Being a former Berkeleyite myself, it was appalling that the UBP wanted to get rid of it! Remember the original plan was to have ONE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL!!

    • sandgrownan says:

      Jesus..here we go..it’s the white man’s fault.

Same old refusal to take responsibility by the cool aid drinker.

      • Hmmmmm says:

You will never get me to bite at that grunt bait. I don’t blame the white man for anything. White people have always been who they are. The issue is black people who still think that white people exist to do good for them. I gave up blaming whitey a long time ago; the freedom of not being a victim is great. It allows you be just as mercenary as they are in decision making and life. The curse of black people is to be too nice. That’s why the UBP was so successful. Sir Henry Tucker told them in so many words, “we don’t have to like them or even socialize with them; but we need them in the front because they’ll get the votes for us…..” To quote C.V. “Jim” Woolridge “those white boys don’t mind a black face as long as they’re still in charge…..”

        • sandgrownan says:

Essentially, what you have is a flat out refusal of the cool aid drinkers to consider the possibility that the PLP have got it wrong. As evidenced by lp and others we have the old “blame someone else” routine, the UBP or as here, whitey. It’s akin to Ewart talking about plantation questions.
It’s old hat. It’s a poor, worn out argument.

In the final analysis, the PLP have failed.

          • bermudians at da best says:

Can’t wait to see you run the country FRUIT PUNCH! We already no – the party name will be KOOL AID you don’t even have to tell us!

    • crazytalk says:

You think the PLP “came in when the bubble was starting to burst”? Have you any idea what has been going on?

They had a good 10 years of economic momentum after 1998 before it all went wrong. There was a balanced budget (or close to it) every year until about 2006. Then Brown etal (including Cox) started spending like drunken sailors. They made extremely bad decisions. No other way to describe it.

By the way I notice they didn’t spend the billions on reforming the school system, which you seem very unhappy about. Maybe you need to vote for someone that might do that, because the PLP evidently won’t or can’t.

  18. Geza Wolf says:

Poltics, Wealthy individuals working for self-interest, mean while perpetuating a lie that they are just like everyone else and want nothing but to make life easy for the working class…

These people make over $100,000 a year..that IS NOT working class. These people are rich and want nothing but to expand on their wealth and consolidate power.

If they wanted to help bermuda they would take a respectable paycut and actually make some headway on locking up criminals. Because as it stands now, criminals are commiting crimes without any repercussions..

  19. lp says:

To PLP Supporter: I would prefer a Govt who is more aligned with the plight of the ordinary Bdian than that of the far right UBP with their racist policies anyday. The PLP is not perfect and sure I get frustrated from time to time, but the fact is that there are some things that cannot be undone or fixed as quickly as we would like. (Black) People stand a better chance getting opportunties (entrepreneurship, financial empowerment, etc) from this Govt than any other Govt that espouses UBP ideals. And crazytalk, your profile name is apppropriate. You strain at gnats and are swallowing the camel. There is a root cause for everything and such causes were not created in 12 years. Initiating discussions of race relations or race issues are mostly initiated by people of colour it’s a fact. I applaud the PLP for trying at least and it’s a bold start. The fact that Bdians feel open and free to discuss such topics is progress in itself, not like in the past when you were seriously ostracized for speaking on the subject for fear you would get your mortgage called in for some sham reason. And woe to any white person who stood up for equal rights (can anyone say Dr. Ball? hello? Kudos to her efforts). When the heat is turned up, there will always be white flight that’s a fact.c White flight off the island, white flight to the private schools, etc. We need the BRRI but it does not work if whites continue to be afraid of it and erroneously call the conversation divisive when race is discussed. You cannot discuss race relations without being uncomfortable and the sooner whites realize this the better. Some whites do get it like those who are in CURB, etc. But not enought. Most whites do not want to feel uncomfortable so it’s far easier to resort BRRI to name calling only. Inflationary tactics refer to those old established businesses on the island pushing their markups to obscene levels. Grocery prices are just plain ol’ extortion nothing less. And you know what? They still refuse to bring down their prices for the most part even with the still existing 300 percent markups! Who owns the shipping companies? Distributions companies? The large real estate agencies? And you’re going to tell me that there has been no manipulation in the market to suit their wallets? Please….

  20. lp says:

Sand you said you wanted examples and you got some. Now you’re side steppin’…typical. If you understood the history of race relations you would understand. Simply saying it’s the white man’s fault is too easy. But answer me this. Why is it that today, in 2011, with the population of Bda having the most college degrees per capita than in most countries, do we still have Bdians with professional certifications (CPAs, CAs, etc) still out of work and find it difficult to find a job? Whereas foreigners just make an application in some overseas magazine with no reinsurance/insurance experience (this is a fact) get to work here, stay here and cry when they cannot receive more permanent status? I have witnessed this. Newspaper ads are customized to the nth degree to hold on to the non-Bdian and turn away the Bdian. The goal posts for these ads are always moving to suit the foreigner. There’s a lot of shinanigans happening behind the scene. And dont’s start on me regarding the pay cuts. The pay grades were independently assessed. Why don’t the rich businessmen take a symbolic pay cut from their hefty bonuses and salaries or volunteer to pay more taxes in an island which is making them rich? Before the PLP, MPs did not need salaries because they had other financial interests to sustain them like their outside businesses.

  23. lp says:

crazy, one of the mistakes the PLP did was to not clean house in the fashion they should have from the very beginning. Term limits from the beginning. African history in the schools to instill black pride instead of the self-loathing we see in our youth, today, from the beginning. Spend billions right from the get-go to dismantle the horror we call our public educations system (thanks UBP), from the beginning, yaddy yaddy. Yes, yes yes, the PLP should have done all this from day 1!! But you know what? It didn’t. Why? The crap they found from the previous Govt required time to change. Some things required practicality. Others required, and i will say it, some appeasment to our bread and butter the international businesses who were crying foul at every turn thinking the boogie man Black Govt were ready to do them in. When people discovered that the new PLP Govt was not the boogie man that they were made out to be since inception, yes there were some boom years for the first decade. Most people benefited. But the machinery which created this bubble was put into place long before it bursted. How typical to blame some of the global financial mess on the PLP. Bda’s reputation was improved drastically under the PLP. Being on the ‘white list’ (what a term…) for tax treaties, etc. Bringing in more int’ businesses than ever. The PLP are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. Times are tough now I agree but we cannot always be looking to Govt to do everything! Again i say, our people stand a better chance under this Govt than the current alternatives.

  24. Michael Dunkley...the milkman says:

Look where some people want to go. I commented on crime and public saftey and the haters want to take it all over the place. In spite of what some might say, and I respect the right of everyone to have an opinion, I will do my best and stand up for a better Bermuda for all. If people want to get personal then that is their loss but it would be better for our future if we attack the message not the messenger. This island is in decay and we need to turn it around or we all suffer! We can do better and I remain willing to play a part in making it happen.

    • sigh says:

Are you going to be the new leader of the UBPBDA?

    • Thanking you... says:

Thank you for your service. We may disagree philosophically but I do believe that you have much to offer. Please keep working to bring all parties together so that we collectively benefit for the brain trusts that exists in each of the parties. To totally refute and not hear the suggestions of one simply because he represents the wrong party will not get us anywhere particularly since there is at this point a serious dearth of new ideas for solutions to our current problems emanating from the current administration…

No you may not readily identify with the hardships of the young black males in our community, but you can identify with the issues associated with running Bermuda Inc. Lets focus on that.

I don’t know why people have to be so hateful and disrespectful in their posts. So unncessary.

    • Uncle Ruckus says:

Haters? This is a serious issue, it’s not about hating. What would you do to stop this “decay”?

  25. lp says:

‘Entitlement complex’ – oh that’s funny. Funny coming from a white person which I know that you are who invented that entire concept. Sand your comments are a waste of time and typical as well. The PLP don’t stand a chance with the likes of you no matter what they do. To actually not consider any of those initiatives (not a one) as having some semblence of positivity tells me a lot. But i don’t really give a rat’s a** if you like them or not. You don’t even sound Bdian. If that is the case, please please please do us both a favour and go back to where you came from if Bda is so bad. But I am guessing Bda was a better alternative even under a PLP Govt which is why you are still here.

  26. lp says:

the milkman says: ‘I will do my best and stand up for a better Bermuda for all’: how original. Where were you and your people when our people were falling through the cracks during your watch? Or are you too afraid? Put your money where your mouth is milkman…

    • sandgrownan says:

      so much hate.

    • Terry says:

Now it’s all Mike Dunkleys fault about people falling throught the cracks. IP- where were and are your black representaives and what have they done. And please don’t give the the slang about fast ferries and hustle trucks…………………..that still ain’t working.

  27. lp says:

also mr. milkman, just because truth is expressed does not make it a hateful comment. There are reasons for all of this crime, etc and for you to put your head in the sand and ignore the history of it shows your mentality is no further ahead than pre 1998. KNOWING the history and LEARNING from it so that it is not repeated is a first step…milkman.

    • sandgrownan says:

I can almost sense the bitterness, knowing the PLP’s grand experiment failed…noqwhere to turn, nowhere to go..so let’s blame the UBP, blame the white man, The Queen, let’s even blame it on Michael Dunkley.

      Pathetic.

      • Michael Dunkley...the milkman says:

@Ip…I agree we must know history and learn from it and yes there are reasons for the crime and perhaps you will share some of your thoughts as to the reasons?

  28. lp says:

Like I said sand, our people received more opportunties under this Govt than the previous. That’s a fact. Now the UBP and newBPers realize the voting power block Black Bdians have and are crying foul at every turn to sway this block. What’s pathetic is the stance of the white voters who refuse to acknowledge any Black effort as positive. Look at the stats. I am stating truth sand. Too bad that it scares you or makes you uncomfortable. If you knew and understood your history you would see the light. Now if the milkman can put his money where his mouth is AND remove the white fear of his people of….pretty much everything to do with Blackness, then we as a country can start building in a unified way. But white fear will always be here to stay, so the division continues….now that’s pathetic.

    • lp says:

Thanking you… says to the milkman…’No you may not readily identify with the hardships of the young black males in our community but you can identify with the issues associated with running Bermuda Inc. Lets focus on that.’

Umm, that’s why they were voted out in the first place!! smh.

      • Terry says:

        Define “Our community”.

      • Thanking you... says:

yeah but now we realize we need a combination of skills…yes the PLP can identify with the young black males but cannot identify with a balanced account…which of these is most important to you? Can’t say and we shouldnt have to make a choice. Lets just put the skills we have available to us to good use for the betterment of the country…

    • Michael Dunkley...the milkman says:

@Ip…i note your comment re “our people” This is where the problem lies. We must stop the divide and conquer mentality. Also you like to refer that you state the truth but never support it with any facts, in reality it is just your opinion. The nonesense you write about white fear being the reason we have division is laughable, it is just a broad generality. Stop blaming everyone else and let’s be tolerant and hopeful of what we can do as one people. Finally my money is always where my mouth is as I am not afraid to stand up and be counted and never hide even behind a pen name.
      Hope not hate my friend.

    • LOL (original) says:

remove the white fear of his people

      LOL

  29. lp says:

Terry try to keep the issues as high as you can. But if you insist, fast ferries are being utilized and the hustle truck programme did serve its purpose for the duration. Another PLP attempt to try and help our people. At least they try and all people like you can do is critcize and complain. And I am the one accused of hating. Yes, I too would like to know what Thanking you…. meant when they used the term ‘our community’. Because god knows that a certain segment of this society is right now saying ‘as long as it’s happening to them and not us…’. White UBPers will never be able to identify. It’s not like they can’t, they refuse to learn how. Totally not interested, it’s all about the money in ‘Bermuda Inc’. Not realizing that all of us make up ‘Bermuda Inc’. ‘Bermuda Inc’ as we know it only serves a certain segment of this society and leaves another behind. That’s been the problem all along.

    • LOL (original) says:

“Not realizing that all of us make up ‘Bermuda Inc’. ‘Bermuda Inc’ as we know it only serves a certain segment of this society and leaves another behind. That’s been the problem all along.”

      LOL

  30. lp says:

Thanking you…., sand, et al. People like you amaze me and continuously miss the boat. Much of the deficit arose from increased social programmes that the previous Govt dare not touch. Had they done the right thing and focused on the people at the time, they might still be in. Had they done the right thing we would not have many of the social ills we have today. The problem is that their entire focus was on Bermuda Inc! Much of this spending is because the horse is out of the stable pushed out by the UBP. This stuff did not just happen in 12 yrs. These are symptons of a problem which took root and festered long before 1998. This is a case of the chickens coming home to roost and the PLP is trying all sorts of fix it plans to stop the bleed. I agree it’s difficult but it did not have to be. If the ‘our community’ was really true and the UBP took that to heart, we would not be in this mess. Now they will be forever stigmatized for it. You can call it blaming as much as you like. It is what it is and it’s the truth. These problems run deep generationally not just in 12 years.

    • sandgrownan says:

No. The deficit arose because of poor fiscal management, because of huge budget overruns, of non competitive bids contracts, of poor planning and sheer incompetence.

The PLP inherited a surplus, a strong economy, and spent the first administration drinking champagne, then in the second they failed to address education and despite (correctly) despising the massive Cedarbridge project proceeded to not only make the same mistake with Berkeley but also to burn through $100m in the process. On it continued, the cruise ship pier in dockyard, and yet meanwhile the much touted ferries were falling to bits.

And here we are, with same vacant faces, the same blank looks, deer in the headlight stuff from our Premier and finan ce minister. Shame on them all.

Don’t give me any of your moral high ground social program crap. the PLP had it all, and they squandered it all. Through kid in the candy store, qualified audits of public accounts, inadequate controls and management. They blew it.

To say this began pre-1998 is fantasy. This is the result of PLP incompetence.

      • LOL (original) says:

  32. lp says:

TY..says ‘Lets just put the skills we have available to us to good use for the betterment of the country…’

By whom? It’s a fact that the Govt has made huge efforts to hire Bdians within Govt. But have the private businesses followed suit? Do they hire Bdians? I already mentioned the tactics behind the scenes by international businesses to customize job descriptions to renew the work permit of foreigners and displace the Bdian. In 2011 you can still count on one hand senior executives who are Black Bdians in these companies. Now why is that when we have so many of our people who do the right thing, go to school, get a degree and cannot find a job? And I am talking about before the financial collapse. Govt can’t force these businesses to hire Bdians. They can only try control methods regarding work permit etc but it is not enough. The businesses of ‘Bermuda Inc’, who are given these tax break opportunities, refuse to do the right thing. The UBP took away the Stonington program hence limiting hospitality opportunities, the UBP destroyed the education system and despite that, our young people still continue to strive and eventually hit the glass ceilings. We have more Bdians qualified in the field of actuarial studies, insurance, etc then ever before and yet you can still count on one hand the number of Bdian senior executives in these companies. The UBP took away the trade schools at a time when Black men were thriving on that. There could be so much more skilled workers and Bdian business owners today. The middle school concept created a segregationist and isolated society. 11-13 year olds need to see their role models at those vulnerable tender ages in the upper schools. Not wait until they get into S1 by which time the damage is already done. We don’t have inter school sports competition like we should. All of these play a part in bettering a people. Mind you I do blame the PLP for not completely correcting the curriculum that the UBP destroyed. High rents, etc caused by market manipulations are causing people to work 2 and 3 jobs if they now can. This affects families. Many factors have caused us to reach this point where we have this crime, the topic of this thread. Better the people first, ALL people and Bermuda Inc will follow. But the UBP were never interested in that and never will. Even TY alluded to it. smh.

    • sandgrownan says:

Depends, if our University educated folks behave like our bus drivers, then you have your answer.

    • Skeptical says:

There are lots of interschool competitions available to all schools in Bermuda in many sports (football, cricket, swimming, field hockey, tag rugby, track and field, softball, badminton, volleyball, basketball, netball, tennis, cross country and table tennis) So your statement “we don’t have interschool sports competitions like we should” is false.

    • LOL (original) says:

I can’t ever take you and people like Jason and Hmmmmmm seriously and if anyone know who they where in the business world they would never be taken seriously str8 up.

This way the people can hold their respective minister responsible. No party lines…all issues get voted on and you vote your conscious without fear of being thrown out! Hmmm. Naaah let’s just vote party and enjoy the spanking we get every year!

Ip, your reasoning eludes the capacity of these folks. History for them started on November 9th 1998. Before that blacks in government could be “trusted” because they were on the “right side”. Before that it was the “Government’s decisions”. Now its “the Government of the Day”. A subtle turn of phrase that at its core tries to remind us that the power we wield and the awesome responsibility we discharge is really theirs. The PLP could find the cure for cancer and these folks would lead the committee agains it. This exchange turns into this tenor because those of us who support this GOvernment recognize the Dunkleys and Gibbons, Barritts and Moniz for what they really are: a group who simply cannot accept the legitimacy of this Government. If they were Americans they’d be part of the Birther Movement and supporting Donald Trump. Policies don’t matter, we have have what is rightly theirs and there it ends. ONce you get that clear it becomes so much easier to deal with them. You ignore them and press on with what is right. They don’t give two hoots about future care, ferries and low cost airlines. They just don’t think you have the right to do it. simple.

Thanks Hmmmm. The hypocricies never cease to amaze me nor does the underlying stench of racism. I find myself being sucked into such conversations only to realize in the end that things will not change. Racism is more pervasive then we realize, that’s how deep this runs. You’re right, it’s all about lost entitlement and they’re mad as hell.

      • sandgrownan says:

That’s pretty idiotic. Talk about cutting of your nose to spite your face.

      • LOL (original) says:

Funny I have never seen white people in my whole life be as racist as present PLP supporters. Seriously! Then you’ll talk about we must pull together to fix the country. What’s even funnier is that you don’t think your being racist then wonder why white people don’t join the PLP or look at you lot with distrust. You think that all white people are rich and every stereo type out there and you want whites to do what? Work with you. LOL. It’s only in the political arena you know out side of politics race doesn’t really matter to any one but you lot. Those that hold them selves to high standards ethically without prevasive chips on their shoulders seem to get by way better off than the magority of those that talk like you lot.

        LOL

    • sandgrownan says:

Fast ferries don’t work anymore you clot. There’s no money.
Low cost airlines cost us money to entice them here and…no-one comes here anymore..because of violence, sh*t taxis, poor bus and ferry service.
Future care…how will it be funded? Answer that. HOW WILL IT BE FUNDED?

The PLP have failed Bermuda and Bermudians. And the really stupid thing, you and Ip see this as a black-white issue.

I posted this higher up in response to “enfranchisement” and it’s still relevant:

More unemployed, more violence, fewer jobs, collapsing housing market, rampant debt, no liquidity, worse race relations, inability to tackle education, basic healthcare? Use of hospitalists? Closure of the “walk in” clinic (good one Ewart), broken buses & ferries….took 12 years, but yeah, more of the population are “enfranchised”. I bet they feel really “enfranchised”.

I did miss higher taxes. Has it been worth it? I suspect you think so.

      • Hmmmmm says:

“Clot” ? I don’t remember hearing that one in school when they were teasing me. Maybe that’s an insult from the other Bermuda in which you live. Oh wait, we’re all one and race isn’t an issue so it must be because I’m stupid that I’ve never heard or been called that. I don’t “see it as a black white issue”, it is one. There is nothing you can say or do that will convince me otherwise. The only good black person for you is the one who either stands for nothing and smiles all day or has some basic job that doesn’t threaten your economy. The moment one of us sticks our head above the parapet for a cause you don’t support we’re bad boys and girls. Nothing else explains the love affair whites had with Paula Cox when she was the non-threatening, unassuming, soft spoken Minister. Now she is the poster-child for the PLP, she can’t hide anymore and she is forced to actually be a leader, make decisions, travel, be a politician and the headlines and editorials look oh so familiar. What has changed? She caused you little concern when she was bailing out the Bank, cow-towing to international business, cutting all the black community based programmes, working at ACE……then she was all yours. If the spending has ben out of control since 2004 when she took over from her father why did you all wait until 2010 to tell us and make it your clarion call? Because she presented a benign and controllable option to the uppity doctor, that’s why. Mister, i didn’t divide Bermuda along racial lines, i found it this way.

STANDING OVATION HMMMM! It is what it is but if people haven’t lived it, seen it or experienced it, they will never call it for what it truly is.

          • LOL (original) says:

You and Hmmmm are “Just not Smart enogh”

            LOLOLOLOL

        • sandgrownan says:

If you look back over these pages, back through Bermudasucks.com and BIAW and before that Limey in Bermuda you will know we have been calling out the PLP on their dangerous and idiotic fiscal antics since 2004 at least.

It has nothing whatsover to do with race, it’s about competance or rahter the lack of it.

And we should ALL be cow-towing to International Business.

        • Uncle Ruckus says:

Co-sign Hmmmmmm! “Clot”? REALLY ‘TELLING’ CHOICE OF AN INSULT HUH?

Well , well , well , I wonder how many of you are on this post with your P.R.C. certificates proudly stash away in a safety deposit box ? Just remember who made that possible .
Admittedly I,m really disappointed with my Party . The most obvious would be the elevation of former Premier DREB the Horrible . It’s a huge waste of time being angry at the current situation ,I believe the best way forward is to actually become a member and deal with matters from within.
Unlike Jamal , Wayne , and , Maxwell who in my opinion are all chasing the money and the camera , those guys are untrustworthy . My appeal would be to the members of the electorate who are able to talk softly and carry a big stick .
If 200 people of all walks of life suddenly signed on to become members of the PLP , could you imagine the shifting of ideals and loyalties ?

    • sandgrownan says:

But it’s not going to happen because the PLP are untrustworthy and vindictive. They absolutely cannot handle criticism, they see it all as some class/race argument. And yet, love to play the “race card” when it suits.

There is no hate like PLP hate.

    “STASHED”

  38. Watching! says:

Interesting! It seems that anyone who dare speaks out against the Government has a PRC or is white or is simply not Bermudian! How can you expect a Country to grow when we have simple minds voting with these principles? The Leaders are laughing in our faces and we are thanking them for it! Don’t worry, it will all be at an end soon when you realize that you can no longer afford that annual shopping trip. Then and only then will Bermuda wake up!

  39. Watching! says:

Oh and in case you are wondering…I am every bit a pure blooded Bermudian! No PRC in this household.

    • Stayin Down 'n' Dirty says:

WHATS INTERESTING is that not one person who has received or benefitted from the issuence of the PRC has ever thanked the people who made it possible for them to enjoy the benefit , at least not in defence of the PLP .Just an observation .
I,m afraid and concerned that you’ve allowed your emotions to overrule your otherwise sound argument about race , nationality and opposition toward the PLP and its’ members . I seem to recall a certain Mrs.Battersbee who was vociferously against a terrible episode of disrespect to everything we as Bermudians hold dear .She is a person of color , born in Bermuda and suprise !!! A card carrying member of the PLP .
@Sand ..I tend to share most of your sentiments , I believe that to grow we need to replace hate with heal .

      • sandgrownan says:

You don’t know if that’s true or not. you are guessing because it suits your argument.

        • Stayin Down 'n' Dirty says:

You observe , I observe , We both see and interpret issues according to our individual experiences .I went to every PRC meeting and heard the pleading .Have you heard the thanking ? I don’t think so .

          • sandgrownan says:

            You’re being disingenuous.

            • Stayin Down 'n' Dirty says:

              I call it as I see it ! !

              • sandgrownan says:

You sound like Laverne..expecting raspact when none is due.

                • Stayin Down 'n' Dirty says:

You can take your respect and stick it where the sun don’t shine ! ! Former Premier DREB is waiting…
