lawfordCaron Bermuda will be hosting its first annual Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence Dinner on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel.

Under the Distinguished Patronage of the Premier Paula Cox, the inaugural event will honor Peter Durhager, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at RenaissanceRe, for his personal commitment to the Caron Bermuda community.

A keynote address will be provided by Christopher Kennedy Lawford [pictured], who will share his personal experiences with addiction and recovery and the impact of addiction on family.

“The extraordinary level of support, understanding and compassion demonstrated by Peter over the past four years has been the foundation upon which Caron Bermuda has developed into the integrated entity that exists today,” said Gita Blakeney Saltus, Regional Vice President of Caron Bermuda.

“Peter’s personal dedication to the development of best practice recovery services as an imperative for Bermuda, supported by the generous investment of RenaissanceRe, has assisted profoundly in the development of Caron Bermuda as a viable, world-class treatment based solution.”

Peter C. Durhager joined RenaissanceRe, a global provider of property catastrophe and specialty reinsurance, in 2003 and was promoted to Executive Vice President in February 2010.  “Peter Durhager is known for his caring and compassion together with his hard work and dedication to RenaissanceRe. His commitment to reducing the effects of drugs and alcohol dependency in our community makes him a deserving recipient of this recognition,” said Caron Bermuda Award of Excellence Dinner Chairman, Rees Fletcher.

The evening’s keynote address will be provided by Christopher Kennedy Lawford, a member of the famed Kennedy family, who battled a drug and alcohol addiction for much of his early life. In recovery for more than 24 years, he shares his experience, strength and hope to make a difference in people’s lives.

An actor, writer, lawyer, activist, and public speaker, Mr. Lawford has spent the past five years with partners in private industry, the non-profit sector, state and federal governments and patient advocacy groups effecting change and raising awareness about addiction. Presently, Mr. Lawford is working with organizations such as the United Nations, the Canadian Center on Substance Abuse, and the World Health Organization.

The proceeds from the Award of Excellence Dinner will contribute to the Caron Bermuda Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid to families in Bermuda who need assistance with the cost of overseas residential treatment for their loved ones. Additionally, proceeds will help further develop Caron Bermuda’s Adolescent and Family programming, which began in March 2011 in collaboration with Bermuda Youth Counseling Services and local schools.
