Search Is Underway Off Bermuda For Crewman

TuscanyAt 6 pm local time on Wednesday [May 25], the 20,676-ton Hong Kong-registered container ship MSC “Tuscany” contacted Rescue Coordination Centre Bermuda reporting a possible man overboard in position approximately 174 nautical miles southwest of Bermuda.

The 30-year-old chief engineer who was last sighted onboard at 10.30 am local time yesterday morning had not been seen since and a thorough search was carried out of the vessel for the missing crew member.

A US Coastguard C-130 aircraft arrived on scene at midnight and commenced a search of the area aided by four merchant vessels.

The aircraft has since returned to the US with a second C-130 aircraft due on scene at 8:30 local time this morning.

The following merchant vessels — MSC ‘”Tuscany”, ”Stena Polaris”, “Akritas & Overseas Ariadmar” – continue to search the area.

MSC “Tuscany” which had departed Montreal, Canada was bound for the Dominican Republic.

A statement from the US Coast Guard said, “The Coast Guard and commercial ships are searching the Atlantic Ocean approximately 184 miles southwest of Bermuda for a 30-year-old man reported missing from aboard the Greek flagged merchant vessel, MSC ‘Tuscany’, Wednesday.

“Coast Guard watchstanders received notification from Rescue Coordination Center Bermuda, relayed from the MSC ‘Tuscany’, at 5:27 p.m. The MSC ‘Tuscany’s’ crew reported last seeing the man at 9 a.m., and noticed him missing at noon. After searching the ship, the crew called RCC Bermuda for help.

“Using AMVER, the automated mutual assistance vessel rescue system, the Coast Guard has directed three additional vessels to help conduct the search. The Coast Guard also launched an HC-130 Hercules rescue aircrew crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina.”
