Police Warn Of Online Scams Again

June 24, 2011

The Police have warned residents to remain vigilant regarding phishing e-mails and other online scams including ‘official looking’ e-mails claiming to be from any local bank regarding purported security information, as well as fake employment ads.

The full Police statement follows below:

Once again the Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public to remain vigilant regarding phishing e-mails and other scams that attempt to obtain personal information or other sensitive data.

Please be aware that banks or other legitimate financial institutions will never ask you for personal account information such as your password.

In addition, residents should ignore ‘official looking’ e-mails claiming to be from any local bank regarding their ‘security information.’

Another scam to be wary of involves fake employment ads. With adult job seekers eager to find work and students coming home from college for summer break hoping to make some extra money, the possibility of being deceived exists.

Some of the signs of a phony employment ad are:

  • Poor grammar of the ad or response e-mail.
  • If the response e-mail asks for personal information such as your social insurance number.
  • If the response e-mail requires you to part with money.

Of particular note, scammers continue to utilize local publications as well as local ‘.bm’ and ‘.com’ websites to post their scams – so remember to be alert. Don’t assume that just because an ad is published locally or advertised on some of the more popular Bermuda websites that it is legitimate.

Remember – if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is! The Financial Crime Unit can be contacted on 295-0011.
