Senior Citizens Honoured For Contributions

July 6, 2011

Hundreds of the Island’s senior citizens gathered at the Hamilton Princess Harbour View Ball Room on Monday [Jul. 4] for the 25th annual Senior Citizens’ Awards ceremony.

Observing the theme “Silver Explosion: Remembering the Past, Looking to the Future”, close to 50 seniors were honoured for their contributions to the Bermuda community — including seven centenarians.

Premier Paula Cox opened the event, which was hosted by the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and the Minister of Community Development, Michael A. Weeks.

  1. Terry says:

Where are all the white people. Must be an election comming up. “Government has done so much for you under our leadership. Tell the children to vote PLP for a better future”..

    • Itcouldhappen says:

Terry, I was wondering the same thing.

    • @Terry:

As a grandson of one of the honourees, your lack of tact and respect is unwarranted and unwelcomed. The “where are all the white people” line is unnecessary and plain hurtful to the contributions that these specific seniors had provided their country over the years.

Perhaps the nominations that were provided to the Ministry did not have any seniors from that specific demographic – I do not know. However, we as sensible thinking adults understand that seniors, either white, black, Asian, or other – have ALL EQUALLY provided years of service and wealth to us as individuals as well as a country.

So please think before you speak such silly statements – - organized just to place fuel on fire, or to amuse yourself.

      • Terry says:

I don’t care if your Mother is in the gathering. I stand by comments with no disrespect to your lineage. Your just glossing over, thats all and then state EQUALLY provided. Spin it all you want young black mind.

Where are the White folks, or is the Government that divisive.

        • Painful Truth says:

Terry, you are the racists and its, your ugly head raises all the time. go get a life and we will not vote for obaa

          • no vote says:

say no to the oba vote a vote for them is a vote for people like this terry on this blog.

            • lol says:

              Terry get lost.

              • Terry says:

                Lol…..

Who made you Bernews spokesperson. Truths a bitch eh…

                • Anyone says:

AWW Terry’s mad ’cause black people got acknowledge. Give us a turn Terry,,,selfish jerk.

            • Rond de way says:

This is awesome! As black people, all we have to do to take votes away from the OBA and continue to be ignored and marginalized by the PLP (the party that claims to represent us) is create anonymous accounts on Bernews and pretend that we’re racist white people! I, for one, am a nihilist, and believe that we as Bermudians DESERVE every bit of socio-economic decay that the PLP rains down upon us! We had it good for a while, but its time to suffer needlessly like the rest of the world is!

              APATHY 4 LIFE!!!

            • Terry says:

“no vote”, why bring politics into this. This has zero to do with OBA. Your comments are very racist in that line of thinking. Must be time for an election as many seem to jump on the Lemming Train headed for the North Shore……

I feel sorry for so many that have made this island what it was only to be disappointed at it’s state and destination.

Quo Fata Furunt was brought to fruition by our forefathers. Today it’s a sign of despair. Buono…………..

          • Terry says:

My comments were not racist at all. Tell how they were. Did I call black people names, demean them et al. I stand by my comments because I want to know where were the white elders. Bernews put this up, not me. And when I question I get called a racist?

As for voting for “obaa”, thats your choice. You have already chosen the path to destruction so let the party begin.

        • @Terry:

Spin doctor, I am not. Glossing isn’t my style. But to answer your question, I do not know where they are.

I know specifically how persons were nominated for these awards (as stated in my previous post). I simply provided an explanation as to what may have been a reason for the lack of white seniors represented.

No pro Government rhetoric, no OBA bashing – - I don’t care to get involved in that. My comments were to highlight the accomplishments of the seniors represented and to share in the joy of having my Nana being amongst them – plain and simple.

          • Terry says:

Re-read what you wrote. “Perhaps the nominations”. Thats what I am reffering too. Still comes down to Government, does it not?

            Your explanation seems sincere.
Have a blessed day and best to your Grandmother. She helped build it now you try your damdest to save it.

        • Anyone says:

It’s our tutn now, and Terry is angry. Time will heal Terry, just hang in there. We did.

  3. Congraulations to Bermuda Seniors, Well Done !!

To my knowledge, this event is open to all ‘Senior Citizens’ in Bermuda. This is the 25th annual Senior Citizens’ Awards ceremony, it is held each year. There are several Senior Citizen events that take place via the year. No matter who is the government !! The Seniors that came out to the event, come almost every year, and many enjoy themselves.

Young Black Mind is correct, it is not always necessary to behaviour in such negative way to everything. Also, be aware that Black persons always attend most events in Bermuda, the persons that do not come to events are whites. Do not believe me, attend some public events and count for yourself. But it is a known fact. Since we still struggle in Bemuda with racism, things often remain separate but equal and sometimes unequal.

But I pray daily that this will change (racism), , and I pray that others will reflect and change as well !!

May God continue to Bless our Seniors. Well done !!

  4. UD says:

YAY GRANNYYYYYYYYYYYYYY I’ so Proud of You and the rest of the awarded Seniors

  5. second says:

Congratulations to the reciepients of the award !! I have nothing personal against them. However….
Come on….. fair is fair. Let’s stop dividing the country like this. We must be seen to be dealing with ALL the people that make up the community.

  6. UPDATE:

I spoke with my Grandmother and others who were present at the event. There was several WHITE Seniors who were presented with similiar awards at the event – they did not stay for the group photo (as neither did my grandmother). The event was 3 hours long, thus several seniors required time in bathroom facilities and others just wanted to get home. This event is held every year and seniors of all races have been represented each year. It is not a Black/White thing – - celebrate our seniors and be blessed.

    • Onion Soup says:

Thanks for that clarification, YBM…and congratulations to your Granny!

    • second says:

Thanks so glad to hear that!

  7. Onion Soup says:

Congratulations to all the recipients of the award…I see some familiar faces in the crowd pictured and am so very pleased that you’ve been recognized for your contributions to Bermudian society. However, with approximately 40% (correct me if I’m wrong) of the Bermudian population NOT being black, I also wonder why it is that not a single senior of another race was chosen to be honoured. I know dozens of worthy people who have been teachers, public servants, caregivers, volunteers, etc. who have never received any kind of public recognition for their dedication to bettering the lives of ALL Bermudians. How are the recipients chosen, and by whom?
