Video/Results: Women’s Hockey

February 10, 2012

This past weekend, three women’s hockey matches took place at the National Sports Center on the grass, as the Hockey Pitch at the National Sports Center is being replaced.

Chairman of the National Sports Center Trustees Sean Tucker said, “This work is done at no cost to the Trustees, when the surface was laid in 2004, we has issues with it, and then maintenance was done on it in 2007, we noticed that the stitching was coming out and a few other things like fading of the pitch was going on.”

Mr Tucker concluded, “We spoke to the company that laid the surface and negotiated with them and they have agreed to come down and do the work, we are hoping that the resurfacing will be completed by early April and I do hope the Hockey community understand that when this is done they will have a better and safer surface to play on.”

Ravens 0 Bluebirds 3

Laura Bardgett was able to connect on one of these occasions and was awarded the first goal after her shot was deflected off a Ravens defender and into the net. In the remaining minutes before half time, Joanne Smith-Barrow found herself one on one with the goalkeeper and lifted the ball into the net for the Bluebirds 2nd goal.

Despite some fancy goalkeeping from Jo Bielby and solid defending by Jenn Adderley and Sue Ward, Joanne Barrow-Smith converted her second goal of the day late in the game. The Bluebird/Ravens match up had five mother/daughter pairings with four of them being on opposing sides.

Wildcats 5 Canaries 0

Susanna Almeida and Karen Campbell are proving to be the driving force in Wildcats with both of them scoring 2 goals apiece in this contest. Eva Dillas also scored for Wildcats for the 5-0 shutdown of Canaries.

Budgies 6 Cardinals 0

Budgies defeated Cardinals 6 – 0 with Jasalle Smith scoring a hat trick during the match. Jasalle Smith is one to watch as she quietly goes about adding to her goal scoring tally. The stats at the end of January, 2012 show her sharing the top goal scorer position with fellow team mate Mel Fullerton and Bluebirds Joanne Smith-Barrow with 5 goals apiece, so this will continue to be a hot contest until the end of the season. Other goal scorers were Tracy Stewart, Raven Pearman and Amy Fox.
