UK Team Extends Nahki Wells Contract

March 9, 2012

Bermuda’s Nahki Wells’ deal with UK team Bradford City has been extended until next summer. The 21-year-old has scored seven goals this season so far, and is currently second in City’s scoring charts.

Joint chairman Mark Lawn said: “Nahki is one of those unusual lads that’s actually benefited from not being over-coached. He causes problems with his natural speed and ability. I don’t think people know what he is going to do next.

“Phil (Parkinson) is working on parts of his game and he has still got a lot to learn. But you don’t want to lose that natural spirit from him.”

“We have taken up the option on Nahki’s deal following on from doing the same with Ross yesterday,” said City boss Phil Parkinson. “Nahki is a player that is improving all the time and we are really pleasing with his recent efforts.

“He knows that he must keep working hard to improve himself as a player but he is an exciting young talent and we are enjoying working with him.”

A statement issued by Bradford City said, “Wells’ contract was due to expire in the summer after joining the club last July but City will now exercise the extra year option that was in place in the Bermudian’s original deal.

“This encouraging piece of news for City supporters comes only a day after the Bantams chose to also extend the contract of fellow striker Ross Hannah in the same fashion.

“The Bermudian international has become of the Bantams’ main attacking threats in recent months since breaking into the side towards the end of last year.

“Wells has scored seven goals this season so far – including five in his last thirteen appearances – to leave him currently sitting second in City’s scoring charts.”

Not sure how a point is being proved to Carlisle United.

Last time I checked they are one point off a League One play off spot, while Bradford are five points away from the League Two relegation zone.

Can’t we happy for Mr Wells while also having some idea of context?

    Frank

    • hammer time says:

@Frank I’m not referring to either of the teams current standings I’m more or less pointing out the fact the the Carlisle manager felt Nahki was incapable of developing at the rate that he is now progessing at & didn’t give the chance to prove himself before sacking him. Come on now think a little more outside of the box

      • FrankTalk says:

Wells is making some inroads to demonstrate he can play at the lower end of League Two.

Carlisle had to take a view on whether he looked likely to be able to make a contribution – two division higher and the jury is still out

Football in the Championship versus League TWO might as well be different sports….

        • hammer time says:

I recall the 35yard+ goal he scored in the FA cup was against a Championship side therefore there is a possibility that with hard work he may be able to reach that level, you have to admit that he has a lot to learn about the English game, its not something you can just jump into and expect instist success. Shaun Goater did NOT start out for Man City one time, he had to work his way from the lower divisions. Besides ANY Professional League in England is of higher standard than “Bermuda” ball.
