Bermuda Women’s Council Scholarship Launch

June 13, 2012

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2012 and the theme: “Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures”, the Minister of Youth, Families and Sports Glenn Blakeney, the Department of Human Affairs and the Bermuda Women’s Council, today announced the opening of the scholarship application process for their “Extracurricular Scholarship for Girls”.

This scholarship is open to all Bermudian girls within the local primary, middle, and senior schools. Grants will be made up to $500 per child and are available for local extracurricular activities only.

The Bermuda Women’s Council believes that a scholarship toward extracurricular activities for girls is very important, as studies show that girls involved in extracurricular activities receive higher grades than those who are not involved in such activities and additionally, these activities have been shown to improve the student overall .

Minister Blakeney said: “Extracurricular activities also helps young girls with character building, teaches them lifelong skills, saves some who might otherwise drop out of school, and helps others develop appropriate social skills.”

Chairperson of the Bermuda Women’s Council, Laurie Shiell said: “I am delighted and excited about this scholarship, and I am grateful for the Minister’s support with this endeavour. These young ladies will be afforded the opportunities for developing a variety of social and personal skills which may help them to become productive members of our community.”

Contact Ms. Deborah Bradford at the Department of Human Affairs, at dbbradford@gov.bm or 294-9734 for information on obtaining the application form and other inquiries. The deadline for receipt of the application and supporting documents is June 30, 2012.
