[Updated with video] This morning [Oct 11] the One Bermuda Alliance formally confirmed that St George’s Mayor Kenneth Bascome will challenge Dame Jennifer Smith in Constituency #1 St. George’s North in the upcoming General Election.

This was the second meeting between the two, with Dame Jennifer defeating Mr Bascome by 8 votes in the 2003 General Election.

The OBA has now rolled out 31 candidates, with their candidates for C#34 Sandys South Central, C#32 Southampton West, C#29 Southampton East, C#20 Pembroke South West, and C#14 Devonshire North West to be announced.

Outspoken & hardworking. He is not a seat warmer only putting his hand up when told to. Perfect. A change is coming.

    • OBA (Only Brings Austerity) says:

LMAO, have you ever spoken to Kenny…..

Anyhow, I’m sure people will love to talk about the “Kenny Bascome Toll Tax” on the doorstep.

We got Nandi, who is a pretty face, and Kenny who is a lot of hot air.

      Should be interesting indeed.

      • Eastern says:

        @ OBA (Only Brings Austerity):

Have you ever spoken to Kenny? Obviously you haven’t.

Dame Jennifer has overseen the demise of St. George and has done absolutely nothing for St. George. She hasn’t stood up for the people, the businesses or anything regarding the well being of ST. George.

As for Kenny Bascome’s idea of charging a toll on the Causeway….please explain how we going to pay for a new causeway? Whether you like it or not; it will get washed away again and everyone will have to pay for it whether you like it or not.

Kenny Bascome is 100% for St. George, while Dame Jennifer only shows up in St. George when an election is called and then hi-tails it back up the country when it’s over. Did she fight to keep the golf course open? no… Did she pressure government to help the businesses of St. George…No What has she done for St. George? I’d really like to know. Does anybody know?

        • citi zen says:

          I know NOTHING

        • onion gal says:

Dame Jennifer has done absolutely bugger all nothing for ST. George’s . . . At least we know Kenny Bascome is an advocate for ALL of ST. George’s! Go Kenny!!!

    • Undecided says:

Someone has promise Mr. Bascome something behind close doors. Like a seat at the table as a Minister!!! As Jim Woolrridge said “those little white boys don’t mind you being in charge as long as they can tell you what to do – “The House That Jack … C.V. (Jim) Woolridge.

      • street wise says:

You’re living in the past. Jim said that a long time ago. He did alright for himself under the UBP.

        • Question? says:

If everyone did ok, why change the name A$$?

          • Anbu says:

Because u stupid fools keep labeling them as racist. What the hell else we’re they supposed to do? Tool

      • Concerned says:

I can honestly tell you that Michael Jones he is NOT!! Pull the bones out of that one. Any accomplishments that Mr. Bascome has obtained has been with honor, integrity, passion and determination. He doesn’t just talk the talk he lives the talk, he doesn’t just walk the walk he lives the walk. If you have never listened to people in St. George’s speak about Mr. Bascome but then you probably have – the NEGATIVE Ones!! I applaud Mr. Bascome and pray that he will be successful in his bid for Parliament and his continued success as Mayor of St. George’s.

    • Amazed says:

The OBA leader recently said that they had ALL their candidates and more. Last week this gentleman indicated that he was approached by everyone to run but we was deciding what was best for him! That tells me he is in it for himself so what does he stand for? What does the OBA stand for since clearly this guy has not been a strong supporter of their vision up to now? This is a real joke!

  2. Yng Black Mind says:

DUH – like noone saw this coming?

I wish Mr. Bascome well in his campaign – - will be interesting to see if his suggestion of a toll for the Causeway will effect the voting – very interesting.

    Yng Black Mind
    (those who know understand)

    • Come Correct says:

That would do wonders for traffic congestion huh? I’d build a raft in blue hole for my luggage and swim across to the airport before I paid that toll. St. Georges, St. Davids and all the residents will suffer. A money grab is not a smart idea in these times. Bad move on the oba’s part, I wouldn’t blame the plp if they take this and run with it.

    • Concerned says:

I truly feel there should be funds from the landing fees at the airport going to St. George’s – can someone please the costs of each plane’s fees. You will be amazed I am sure at the $$$$ the government receives from the airport on landing fees alone.

  3. Who Would Have Known says:

I think we all knew this was coming but even with the crazy ideas Mr. Bascome has come up with, the OBA is miles ahead of the PLP (Deceiving Bermuda Since 1998).

I am nothing for either party as Politics is just a Pile of Tricks… I’ll believe all that they promise when it’s in front of me.

Jennifer Smith, how is the Education System going? Mr. Bascome how is the Toll-Both idea coming along? lmao

Good Luck to All and to All a Good Night.

  4. Clinton J. A. Paynter OBA Affiliated says:

    The OBA will:

Help the Town stand on its own two feet, directing tax revenues to the Corporation and its partners to balance their budgets, provide for much-needed improvements to the Town’s infrastructure and support its continuing development as a World Heritage Site.

Raise St. George’s profile worldwide. It begins with understanding the Old Town as a unique community that has huge market potential, particularly in the context of Bermuda itself. A Tourism Authority that puts professionals not politicians in charge of tourism will realize that potential. We will make St. George’s a must-see destination.

Secure a dedicated cruise ship for the Old Town, berthing alongside Ordnance Island or Penno’s Wharf, to restore commercial life to the economy.

Get the new hotel project underway. Figure it out, sort it out and make the promise happen. The people of St. George’s deserve more respect on this one. They have been strung along for years with empty promises and theatrics. We will make sure people are kept informed.

Open the St. George’s Police station 24/7. Ask any resident and they will say they want it open. That should be enough for any caring Government to hear. The station nevertheless remains closed at night, and the town becomes less safe because of it.

My people of St. George’s deserve better than what they have received from the PLP…. Time for Change.

    • OBA (Only Brings Austerity) says:

LMAO… Clinton, you repeat Nandi’s talking points so well!

I wonder if Kenny will stay on script, didn’t see you say anything about the Kenny Bascome Toll Tax!

      • Clinton J. A. Paynter OBA Affiliated says:

I’m just repeating what the OBA pledges it will do…

Actually I did… I thought it was/is a ridiculous idea not even worth considering. IMHO we already pay enough tax. For what it’s worth that wasn’t an OBA idea.

        • Joonya says:

No worries Clitnon, this is just another fool who complains when the opposition doesnt want to provide ideas to help his beloved party out of the mess THEY created, and then complains when they do provide suggestions and plans as above. They must be schizophrenic.
If this govt gets back in they’ll all be whinning when their beloved pary is forced to introduce income tax as the only means to sustain the economy and pay for their past incompetencies and corruptive manoeuvres.

          • Concerned says:

Didn’t you see Zane DeSilva’s great idea – Tax junk food and cigarette’s – In comes the tax

        • Real Talk says:

Kenny has his own ideas, you’ll see what happens when you invite a pit bull to the family OBA/ubp dinner.

        • OBA for now says:

Clinton please shut up, that’s why the team didn’t run you. Oh though you mean well, you talk to much. They saw you as a serious business risk and you best believe I heard this from the same person who was begging me to run! I told them I will not be puppet, but their plan appeared to look good on paper! I wish the OBA good luck.

          • Laughing says:

            LOL

          • Concerned says:

If that is so – why didn’t you get with Clinton to discuss that because apparently you don’t why Clinton did’t accept the invitatin to run. Now you are biting at his ankles on one side of your mouth and encouraging him on the other. You need to smile to keep your tongue from moving.

    • BDA says:

How can you say the people of St. George’s need change and then give us the same options. Kenny has been Mayor for how long? Please tell me what he has done besides get the Police Station open 9-5 with only 1 officer there that cannot leave? If you need assistance in St. George’s, you have to wait for an officer to come from St. David’s. Oh wait!!! We have new speed bumps every 2 feet throughout the whole town!

      • Who Would Have Known says:

Please tell me what he has done besides get the Police Station open 9-5 with only 1 officer there that cannot leave? If you need assistance in St. George’s, you have to wait for an officer to come from St. David’s. Oh wait!!! We have new speed bumps every 2 feet throughout the whole town!

9-5 this is truly Bermuda Gov and I guess if I go at 5:01pm I am sol

seed bumps every 2 feet lol now that is funny but true!

You all crack me up… Bathroom Break!

  5. BDA says:

Great….Knew this was coming. Why are we still getting the same? Although I support OBA, I am voting for the person not party. Do I have another option? Guess I will not be voting this time around.

  6. LaVerne Furbert says:

I see party old UBP is standing strong behind Mr. Bascome – Dr. Kenneth Snaith. Nothing changes, if nothing changes. So when is the election for Mayor?

    • Portia says:

That was held in May of this year, Ms. Furbert. Please get current.

      • LaVerne Furbert says:

Portia, Obviously Mr. Bascome cannot serve as mayor and as a candidate for Parliament. You’re the one who needs to get current.

        • Portia says:

Ms. Furbert, I think you mean “he cannot serve as mayor AND IN Parliament” not “as a candidate for Parliament”. Obviously, if he wins the seat, he will step down as Mayor.

    • Jason R. says:

That is a pretty bold statement (assumpton) Ms. Furbert. To my knowledge he (Snaith) has never aligned himself with any political party before today. Hmmmm wonder why he feels now is the time to take a stand…

      • LaVerne Furbert says:

What you mean is that you’ve never known him to align himself with any political party. That is not to say that he has not aligned himself with a political party. Everybody knows Dr. Snaith’s political leaning. But, that’s his choice and I’m not knocking him for that.

        • LOL (original TM*) says:

But you did knock him for it……………………

          LOL

    • One voice says:

Yes Kenny B. is a joke has anybody out there ever tried to have a conversation with the self acclaimed st. Georges super hero!!!!!. What a joke!!!!!!!!
And to LaVerne do you really think there is anybody in BDA that is interested in your racist blubber but yourself, but then again if it was not for the PLP you would not have a job since the Union would have gone belly up! Kinda understand where you are coming from.

      Good luck BDA

    • Concerned says:

Laverne – go dig up your garden and wait with your cigarette for the beautiful array of colorful flowers to bloom and then you can begin to the many weeds out the garden and your thoughts – hold on your thoughts aren’t your thoughts are they?

  7. Justice not Peace says:

Hey Bernews, when will we get a sound bite?

    • Bernews says:

Sorry about the delay! The cameraman had to go direct to another press conference, but he will upload the video right after this one finishes, so hopefully say by 12.30pm or so we should have it up.

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

We don’t need a sound bite. We know that the former mayor’s speech will be filled with”I’s”. I did this, I did that, I, I, I, I….. That’s all he talks about when he comes on any talk show – himself.

  8. hmmm says:

    LOL don’t make me holla.

Wonder how much the toll will be to travel to St Georges and St David’s?

Bob doesn’t look too happy here.

Where are Barker’s beauties!? Conspicuously absent?

I thought Kenny said that he won’t run for Parliament anymore because his ambition was to be Mayor. Now he will have to give up the Mayor role if successful.

If anyone saw him on Let’s Talk then they know he is all about self and did not speak well or carry himself well at all.

    SMH.

  9. Vote for Me says:

    @ Clinton Paynter
I note your comment about a Tourism Authority. How do you propose for the Authority to be funded? I trust you will not suggest that government funds the Authority but relinquishes any influnece over the authority.

One of the challenges with Tourism is that the private sector continues to complain about government but the sector has not established its own equivalent of a private authority. Once established, the authority can either act independantly or liaise with the Ministry of Tourism.

For the St. George hotel, it is clear that it is needed to spur activity in the Town. It would be interesting to know the real stumbling block for Bazarian, determine if he is the best developer and to then put up what ever money is required. The alternative is to give whatever concessions aer required to get the hotel started.

We all wait with baited breath to see if / when the hotel will be built.

  10. Vote for Me says:

Interestng picture. The men do not seem terribly happy but I accept it is up to the media to select which photo to use.

Also interesting to note the absence of the normal attendees. I would have at least expected Nandi as the C2 candidate to be present. We all note how people complain vociferously when certain comments are made but it is good to see that the OBA have listened.

@ Portia – I assume Ms. Furbert is referring to the thought that Mr. Bascome cannot stand for Parliament as the sitting Mayor – thus new elections are required? Someone needs to check that point since it probably relates to the new legislation that governs the municipalities.

  11. C'mon son!! says:

This is great news! Kenny is a great advocate for St Georges, is a hard worker and brings a sometimes unbridled enthusiasm to everything he does. He will work hard for the people of St Georges and there is nothing under the constitution that requires him to resign from the Mayorship of St Geo. kenny floated the idea of a toll to get people talking…that’s all. He is a realist and an ‘out the box thinker’…something the OBA values. plp will lose this constituency. Bye bye Jennifer!!!

  12. hmmm says:

    I still find this laughable.

There is no comparison between the standard set by Dame Jennifer and Mr Bascome. None whatsoever. This should be a no brainer but because we are so polarized that’s the only reason it will be close. Dame Jennifer will still pull it off though.

    • media says:

If you are talking about Dame Jennifer’s standard she has set for St. George’s it would have to be pretty low. St. George’s has been neglected and fallen off the radar under Dame Jennfer’s multiple terms there. St. George’s has been financially crippled by this Government and Mayor Bascome has a very meager budget to work with. Under the OBA St. George’s will be raise up again as the jewel in Bermuda’s crown.

  13. JAWS says:

This MOTHER _ _ _ _ _ _ will be putting speed bumps on the causeway next. Dam if I do dam if I don’t. In truth I’m waiting for both parties to roll out their plans.

  14. pebblebeach says:

Stick a folk in Champagne Jenny…she is done..

  15. December 2012 Election Results.bm says:

Dame Honorable Majestic Smith – 325 votes

    Kenny Bascome – 598 votes

    Dear Dame Honorable Majestic Smith,
Dont worry you Patrice, Glen and Jonathan will be in the Senate and your salary’s will be protected. Dont let Kenny upset you in the weeks leading up to 12 December 2012, Election Day.

  16. welldone says:

Hillarity at its best. This guy speaks only of himself and what he can do. The OBA gentlemen in the back look unimpressed. I can read Bob like a book and his facial expressions say “I cannot believe this disaster.” BUT they will soldier on and hope they can persuade enough folks to win the seat. Methinks they won’t though.

  17. Y-Gurl says:

Best of luck Bascome, you have at least proven you care about St. George’s which puts you miles ahead of your opposition

  18. tidbit says:

Congrats Kenny! You deserve this opportunity. It is time you folk in St. George kick her out. Who down there have seen her in the last four years?

As for Ms.Furbert it was under her Dame’s watch as Minister Of Ed. the first time when her job at Bda College came to an abrupt ending. She forgets her support as a lay person in the coupe that her cousin/friend(as she likes to call him) assisted in organising. The famous words”We had to fool the people”.

Kenny it is time to take St.George’s back for the St.Georgians and give them true represntation and not lip service. Will she change her license plates on her car again?

  19. tidbit says:

Ms.Furbert should be a consultant to all these talk shows, she seems to have the moderators yielding to her. All besides Mr. Lopes I should say. By the way I normally turn the volume down as soon as I hear her voice.

For one to be so loyal to her party to only get a brief stay in the Senate after so many years of her party being the Government do’s not speak to well. The people in Hamilton Parish already spoke in the primary election as to whether they support her or not to represent them.

  20. LaVerne Furbert says:

Hamilton Deputy Mayor Glen Smith has stepped down in order to run for the OBA in the next General Election.

His resignation from the Council of the City of Hamilton was announced this afternoon.

Said Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling: “Deputy Mayor alderman Glen Smith met with me [yesterday] in the Mayor’s Parlour at City Hall and presented his letter of resignation with effect immediately. I reluctantly accepted his letter.

“Mr. Smith has been selected as a candidate for the One Bermuda Alliance in the upcoming general election. Glen shares the view of the entire Council that municipal politics must remain apolitical. To ensure the City of Hamilton is seen in this light, individually, we may support a particular party but none of us will publically campaign on the behalf of, or run for, that party; a practice we would like to continue. Which is why, prior to any official announcement, Glen has taken this particular stance.”

I guess Mayor Bascome doesn’t believe that “municipal politics must remain apolotical”.

  21. Staying focus says:

The OBA is going down the hill, Kenny and Rodney are twins, its all about “ME, Myself and I”. These guys only care about highlighting themselves. Poor choice, sounds like OBA are at lost for high quality canadiates. Not impressed, my vote will not go to Kenny. He has done nothing except give himself self-praise. WOW, what is next from the OBA…going down hill fast…
