Police Name Murder Victim As Michael Phillips
[Updated with video] The police formally identified the victim of last night’s fatal shooting as 42-year-old Michael Phillips, confirmed that two gunmen were involved, and said there is currently no evidence to indicate that this particular murder was gang related.
At approximately 9.35pm Mr Phillips was shot multiple times while in the parking lot of Mid Atlantic Boat Club on North Shore Road in Devonshire. He worked as a taxi driver, and has been described by friends as a nice guy who was not involved with gangs.
The Police said that Mr Phillips left the club to get on his motorcycle, and one suspect ran into the parking lot and began shooting at him, while the second suspect entered the club and fired approximately 3 shots.
Acting Chief Inspector Calvin Smith said: “At about 9:35pm Sunday 14th October, 2012 Police Officers responded to reports of shots fired on North Shore Road, Devonshire – in the area of the Mid Atlantic Boat Club.
Mr Smith continued “The circumstances are that the victim Michael Phillips attended the Boat Club on a motorcycle. He entered the club, came back outside a short time later and got on the cycle. He proceeded to the parking lot exit. At that stage a suspect ran into the parking lot and began firing a handgun at Phillips.
“Simultaneously another suspect entered the club and fired approximately 3 shots from a handgun causing the crowd of patrons to scatter. No one in the club was injured. The suspects both then left in a westerly direction on what was believed to be a dark colored motorcycle.
“Mr Phillips was taken to the King Edward Memorial Hospital where attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, and he was declared dead a short time later. I can formally identify the deceased as Mr. Michael Steven Phillips, who was 42 years of age.
“I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my sincere condolences to the family & friends of Mr. Phillips who are grieving his loss at this time. The family is being assisted by a Bermuda Police Family Liaison Officer.
“A full investigating team from the Serious Crime Unit is investigating the murder of Mr. Phillips and has been working through the night since this incident was reported, and is pursuing a number of investigative leads. An overseas forensic pathologist will be conducting an autopsy in the near future.
Mr Smith continued: “We have again seen the tragic loss of life unfold in our neighborhoods and I am urging anyone that can assist in bringing offenders to Justice to contact the Police Serious Crime Unit – or by calling Crime Stoppers.
“We are extremely keen to speak with anyone who was in the area of the Mid Atlantic Boat Club at the time of the incident. Any person who may have been with or seen Mr. Phillips within the last 24 hours prior to his death are asked to make contact with the Detectives investigating this incident
“Members of the public who can assist in bringing the offenders to justice can do so by doing the following:-
- Call the independent & confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477
- Call the Serious Crime Unit on 247.1739
- Call any Police Station and speak to one of our officers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on 295.0011
“During previously Press Conferences in relation to firearm incidents the Media are concerned whether those incidents are gang related. Currently there is no evidence to indicate that this particular murder was gang related. The Police will leave no stone unturned to establish the motive behind this latest gun murder,” concluded Mr Smith.
Superintendent James Howard said: “I want to reassure you that we will use all the resources at our disposal to bring the offenders to Justice. However this cannot be done alone, and I therefore encourage anyone with information or knowledge of this incident to make contact with the Detectives in this case, or Crime Stoppers.
Mr Howard continued: “I would also encourage anyone who may have seen or been in contact with Mr. Phillips over the last 24 hours to also contact the officers in the case.”
This is the fourth gun murder of the year, following after the murder of Lorenzo Stovell outside Woody’s in September, the murder of Joshua Robinson at a North Shore barbershop in June, and the murder of Stefan Burgess on Glebe Road in January.
In addition, mystery continues to surround the disappearance of 41-year-old Rudy Smith, who has not been seen since July 2012. The police have officially classified his disappearance as a murder.

Does the boat club have cameras? If not, why not. All the stupidness that has gone down at that club, the police should make them put up cameras as part of there licence.

The incident up Woody’s proved clearly that these fools don’t give a damn about cameras. What shocks me is the fact that many people still go to these locations for a drink. I mean just a month ago someone ran in Boat Club and sprayed bullets and a few years back someone was shot. I think everyone on the island, especially innocent people need to think about where we are going.

That’s a poor excuse, we shouldn’t have to live like captives, when you cease to fight back and allow fear to settle in, you enable them and they win. Based on his age I am wondering just how much he was involved in any activity. Was he an easy target based on where he was drinking? Was he involved in something from the past? Is he someones relative WHO is involved in something shady and illegal? I have a gut feeling he took a bullet based on his location.

By the sounds of the story it doesn’t sound like body armour would have helped much. Now please look at the flip side, in the states there was an incident where I believe it was 2 men suited in full body armour took hostages in a bank, you can read the story and see how long it took the police to take them down and how many injuries they caused. I think there was even a movie about it. No tell me who can afford to be suited up in full body armour? Someone with a government budget or someone who sells drugs. Do we really need a repest of that here before we figure out its a bad idea?
This feels like terrorism or mistaken identity to me, judging from the persons age, picture, and circumstance also the fact that the police believe this was not gang related.
They didn’t say it wasn’t gang related they said there is no ebidence supporting that claim.

I think the public needs to look at the patterns of who got shot. Its our duty to know because it effects us if we socialize in a location where the rivals may party a few days, weeks, months later. UNFORTUNATELY, THESE SAME PLACES WHERE REGGAE AND RAP MUSIC WHERE HEARD AND PEOPLE WHERE STUMBLING OUT LAUGHING AND JOKING HAVE NOW TURNED INTO SHOOTING SCENES. I don’t know where our little Island is going but it’s about time that the leaders of the country put their heads together and get it together.
