Man Admits Threatening His Mother & Police

December 31, 2012

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Dec 31], Paul Williams was remanded in custody after pleading guilty to threatening his mother and the police.

Prosecutor Susan Mulligan told the Magistrate that on 29th December 2012, Williams had gone to his mother — who was at a Seniors home — and demanded money from her. When his mother refused, Williams became aggressive and the police were called.

When the police arrived, Williams threatened to kill both his mother and also threatened the police officer. Magistrate Archie Warner reviewed Williams’ record and noted that he had a long history of violence, and that he was an outpatient at MAWI.

The Magistrate said that while he had the power to incarcerate, he had no power to order the delivery of sustained psychiatric treatment; and that once a person had been placed in the care of MAWI, the medical personnel at MAWI could ordain the release of that person back into Bermuda’s general population.

The Magistrate said that there was a need for a Secure Facility for people who were a known danger or threat to society; but who were not inherently criminal in nature. He said that Bermuda still lacked such a facility.

The Magistrate ordered a Social Inquiry Report, a Psychiatric Report, a Psychological Report, and a Bermuda Assessment and Referral Centre Report and remanded Williams into custody until 31st January 2013.

  1. Sick says:

You are the lowest form of scum this earth has ever seen. To disrespect your own mother like that shows that you are not willing to respect anyone. Your own mother? I’d kill for my mother! You are disgusting.

    • Bobthebuilder says:

In the same manner you judge, so shall you be judged.

    • D. Evans says:

He has a mental illness, perhaps he may not truly understand what he is doing. I am in no way condoning his behaviour. He needs som serious help…

  2. omg says:

    SHAME

  3. University Grad says:

it does say his a patient of MAWI

    • Will says:

most people on this island should be a patient of sorts up there..doesn’t mean what he did was out of his control

  4. Thankfully the mother was unharmed and the took him into custody before the matter got beyond control,Our Seniors are our precious jewels and we need to protect them at all cost.

  5. umjussaying ! says:

What he is ,is a jail bird looking for a flight home .. But to disrespect your mother and dishonor your family the gangsters at west gate should give him a welcome home party like none other.. One that fits the crime ..

  6. St. D says:

This boy’s story is repeated in families throughout the Island. A tangle of drugs and psychosis that never seems to have a happy ending – for the subject, his/her family or our society.

  7. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

As I have said before, but the marijuana advocates don’t want to hear it, and I don’t have the statistics to back it up (because I don’t believe they are being kept) marijuana psychosis appears to be far too prevalent here. I admit this assessment is based on observation and anecdotal evidence alone. However, the possibility is that there is even more out there than I think.
I wish I had the means and the ability to do a clinical study of the damage done to this small island by alcohol and marijuana. Then again, I wonder what difference it would make.

    • Science says:

Pastor. In defense of this harmless plant I must say that many of these illnesses are genetic and passed down through generations. It is however true that some of these individuals that are predisposed may smoke marijuana.

    • Jerome Daniels says:

When was marijuana mentioned as the cause of his admission to MAWI? Did I miss something

    • Um Um Like says:

So Pastor, are you claiming that Paul Williams is suffering from “marijuana psychosis”? Are you claiming that the reason he did what he did is solely or primarily due to alcohol and/or marijuana use? There couldn’t possibly be any other reasons, right!?

    • Bobthebuilder says:

So pastor, what is a good place where I can take in my new year festives??? I need a speedy response as there is only 6 hours and 40 minutes left in2012.
      Thank you

    • Will says:

pastor what is your hatred towards marijuana? if you think that every crazy person in the world is suffering because of a marijuana induced psychosis you are terribly prejudiced and WRONG! I smoke weed, i have no psychosis at all. Studied at university and graduated…and didn’t start talking to myself or threatening people..you sir are very misinformed and you said it yourself, YOU HAVE NO EVIDENCE TO BACK UP ANYTHING!!!

    • Will says:

oh by the way how can you keep statistics on something that can’t really happen? you shot yourself in the foot by starting your argument with acknowledging you have no evidence or stats to show…FAIL

  8. Winnie Dread says:

All these reports, how about a it’s time you grow up bro, report.

  9. STR8 says:

Paul is ah livin a$$ he breaks into everyones home. He is public nuisance an needs to be put away forever.

  10. hmm says:

He is simply stating that there are a lot of similar instances like this around the island, many have started because of smoking marijuana.
It starts off as a fun thing you do with you and your friends and then it escalates to Needing it every weekend, then every other day, and then every day. Then you need it every 5 hours. That is defined as a drug and a drug habit.
Even if this man never smoked marijuana many people do go into delusion like this young man because of marijuana.
It also holds a lot of young men back from being ambitious and seeking goals in ones life. They end up being a log tied around their families house and then their mothers have to take care of them, they begin to ask their family for money every week and then every day no matter what in order to support their habit because they are too lazy and high or deranged at this point to get a job.
And then it gets to the point that you have to follow your mother all the way to the seniors home for money to get your next fix because you have no way of getting any money for your habit.

Sad story the police really need to go house to house and start protecting women like this as their are a large amount of women living on the island under these conditions. If this had happened at her home instead of the seniors rest home we would have probably never heard about this story.

    • Science says:

It is sad that parents are being threatened and disrespected, but we cannot blame this on a plant. Dysfunctional behavior patterns exist for many reasons i.e. genes, poor nutrition, upbringing etc…

We build/find a nest to raise our young, teach them to survive and once they learn how to fly they are on their own. This is advanced social behavior and it takes time, effort and attention.

    • Will says:

so very untrue..some people are predisposed to being a lazy ass..weed may only perpetuate that. oh and i dont need it all the time, havent had any for weeks and i’m not walking around scratching my face or peeling open sores because i’m suffering from withdrawal…have some common sense people. People being lazy in Bermuda, well look at the demographic, has nothing solely to do with cannabis, it has to do with years of a mentality based on wanting every thing you never had but not working towards it. Call it institutionalized racism or whatever, but seriously loads of white people smoke weed and hold down great jobs, so do black people..its just the generation of 18-26yr olds who have been convinced by their elders that they have suffered at the hands of the oppressor and now should be fed with a silver spoon = laziness.

  11. Unjust Realities!!!! says:

Pastor please . . .he has a self induced drug psychosis . . .MAWI prescribes medication, he stabilizes and then he stops taking his meds . . .it’s called CHOICES!!!!

And no I’m not an advocate of marijauna use either!!!!

    • DC says:

I’m not an advocate either but there are persons with mental health issues who believe they do not require medication. They think they’re fine. Others take their medications but when they start feeling better they stop taking them. Not unlike persons taking meds for ailments like the flu or some infection. I know that we have choices, but with some persons who have mental health issues it’s just not that easy. The judge is correct, Bermuda needs a facility to handle persons like this guy.
With regard to Pastor Hayward’s statement, it would be great if there were statistics to show the number of persons who experience drug induced psychosis. I think we would be surprised at the results! Contrary to some beliefs, marijuana is NOT a harmless plant! Just because it grows naturally doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good for consumption.

  12. Nuffin but de Truth! says:

Glad I didnt see or hear this scumbag,he would have been begging for the Police!

  13. Xman says:

    Bring back the
CAT & 9 TAILS — OH’ what a difference this would make

    • Will says:

all for the Cat…but whipping a clinically mentally ill patient might be going a bit far..jus sayin

  14. me says:

@pastor…. Your kidding right? You have zero scientific evidence to support any thing you have said. But that’s to be expected from someone who screams superstitions at a congregation for a living…
