Police Identify Accident Victim As Malik Weeks

December 26, 2012

[Updated] The police have formally identified last night’s road traffic collision victim as Malik Weeks. The 24-year-old died after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle collision in Hamilton Parish late Christmas evening.

Mr Weeks was the son of PLP MP Michael Weeks, and a statement from the Party said: “Although no words can share our grief, on behalf of the Progressive Labour Party and Bermuda as a whole, we express our profound condolences to MP Michael Weeks, Mrs. Terri Lynn Doyle and their entire family.

“Malik was a fine and upstanding young man and an excellent father to his young daughter. We will rally around MP Weeks and his family, and provide the love and strength that God willing, will allow his family to slowly heal. Our prayers are with the family in this tragic time.”

A statement from the police said: “Police can now confirm the death of 24 year old Malik Weeks who died as a result of a single vehicle road traffic collision that took place on North Shore Road and Old Road in Hamilton Parish.

“Injuries into this fatal collision are on going and any witnesses are encouraged to contact PC Hassell of the Roads Policing Office on 295-0011 or 247-1200.

“The Bermuda Police Service extends our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Weeks. The death of Malik Weeks marks the ninth road fatality for 2012.”

The death of Mr Weeks marked the second tragic occurrence on Christmas Day, following after the murder of 20-year-old Malcolm Augustus early on Christmas morning.

Update 3.10pm: Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell today offered his sincere condolences to to MP and former Minister Michael Weeks and his family following the death of his son Malik on Christmas night.

Minister Crockwell said: “On behalf of the Government and everyone in Bermuda, I offer my sincere condolences to Michael and Cindy and their family at this most difficult and distressing time. To lose a young son in such a tragic situation on Christmas day is unfathomable.

“Everyone in Bermuda must do their part to end the deaths on our roads that occur all to frequently. The statistics are frightening. We have had nine road traffic deaths on our roads this year, and almost every one was a young male on a motorbike. And most of these deaths were preventable.

“We must all slow down and take personal responsibility for our actions on the roads. At this festive time of year we should heed the message from the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA) to ABCD – Always Bus, Cab or Designated Driver. We simply cannot afford to have another death and grieving family.”

It is most unfortunate that in all of the “politicking” that everyone has forgotten that Malik had a mother and a father. My condolences to both parents, and all who loved and knew Malik.

    • Mom's gingerbread says:

What the heck are you yapping. Every comment said Mr. Weeks and family, or to the Weeks family. Stop trying to make everything about politics

    • Truth (Original) says:

      What are you talking about?

    • Between de lines says:

Please! No one mentioned anything about politics except you! And just about everyone said ‘Mr Weeks and family’. Next time you make a comment at such a sad time, please be more considerate.

      • Unjust Realities!!!! says:

I think you all took what Ms. Furbert was saying totally out of context, in that the young man’s mother is not Mr. Weeks wife and what she is trying to say is that condolensces should be stated as “condolensces to the parents” versus Mr. Weeks and family.

        • Between de lines says:

I get your point, but as many others have noted here, whether in or out of context, politicizing this matter was totally inappropriate, annoying, and downright shameful for Ms Furbert. A ‘family’ just lost their son, brother, father, cousin, etc… point is no matter who was or was not mentioned, as long as each of them was connected to the young man, they are his family… and everyone knows it including Ms. Furbert. To hell with politics.

    • Dee (Original) says:

What is even more unfortunate is that you make everything around you just plain ugly. People were all expressing their condolences in their own way, and you had to twist it. Everybody knows he had a mother AND a father. I’m assuming you made that comment because Minister Crockwell referred to Mr Weeks and his current wife, but he meant no harm. Even in tragedy, you get your digs in and try to get people riled up and emotions flared. You are one sick individual Laverne Furbert!!! RIP Malik

    • Douglas says:

My family’s best wishes and condolences to the family of this young man. This is past unacceptable.

Ms. Furbert, you need some help, seriously!! Where did you get politics from in ANY of the preceding comments?! Every comment was positive, well EXCEPT YOURS! Which is why most people just ignore what you say as irrelevant.

My heartfelt condolence goes out the BOTH parents Mrs Doyle and Minister Mr. Weeks and the ENTIRE family of this young man ( Malik ). Hold onto your memories of him cause the memories never die, my heart is so heavy right now cause I know just how you all must be feeling, I lost my son and an early age, no parent should have to bury a child no matter how old they may be. God Speed young man and may you R.I.P.
To Laverne Furbert please please watch what you say sometimes, you are always trying to ruffle up something, how was anyone to know that the current Mrs.Weeks was not this young man’s mother, all the people were doing was sending their condolences to the family, stop making everything political, you are so narrow minded.

  23. Bermudian says:

God is our refuge and strength a very present help in trouble.
