Antwan Russell Scores In Second Ilkeston Game

April 6, 2013

russell1[Updated with video] Bermuda international Antwan Russell opened his goal account at the New Manor Ground this afternoon [Apr. 6] as his Ilkeston Football Club claimed a 2-2 draw against the Evo-Stik League’s Premier Division front-runners.

As against Buxton in midweek, Bermudian striker Mr. Russell joined the action with half an hour left and within minutes he made a crucial contribution, collecting the ball midway inside the North Ferriby half and tricking his way past a defender before calmly passing it into the net.

It was a moment for the Robins — as the Derbyshire team is known to its supporters — to savour but sadly, it didn’t prove to be the winner because North Ferriby were awarded a controversial penalty after 74 minutes.

Match reports say today’s game was a rousing performance by a team who have now lost just once in the last eight games and manager Kevin Wilson said: “I think North Ferriby got out of jail with the penalty and I feel sorry for my lads because they’ve been absolutely fantastic. Maybe when you are going for the title, those sort of decisions go for you.

“The table says that North Ferriby are the best team in our League and I think they are. But it shows just how far this club have come in less than two years when we can match the best in the League and outplay them at times.”

Mr. Wilson was delighted former Dandy Town and Bermuda Hogges player Mr. Russell had demonstrated his potential less than a week after flying into the UK.

He added: “Antwan showed his class with a fine goal and and hopefully that’s the first of many he wlll score for us. It would have been even better if it had been the winner.”
