Flights Delayed Due To Lightning Strike At Airport

August 6, 2013

Two flights were delayed yesterday [Aug 5] after a lightning strike caused an electrical surge in one of the radio communication systems at the airport.

A Transport Ministry spokesperson said, “A powerful lightning strike from a severe thunderstorm cell caused an electrical surge in one of the radio communication systems at the L.F. Wade International Airport at approximately 9am Monday morning.

The slideshow below shows a lightning storm last summer in St George’s:

“This resulted in a brief outage that led to a temporary halt on Bermuda-bound traffic. The system was returned to service in just over an hour,” continued the spokesperson.

“The short outage affected two scheduled flights – Jetblue from JFK and Delta from Boston. While Delta arrived slightly delayed, the Jetblue flights were cancelled for reasons non-related to the system outage.”

This is the third time in the past year lightning has caused damage in the East End, with the Swing Bridge in St George’s becoming temporarily stuck following a lightning strike last year, which was followed by a lightning strike which damaged some of the equipment at the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre.

Does anyone know if the BWS radar is out due to lightning? Seems whenever it’s most needed by boaters it’s out of service.

@ Onion Island Girl…It has been out of service since Friday. Nothing to do with the lightening. You are right about the bad timing…..
