MP Brown: Brangman’s Claim Is ‘Simply Untrue’

October 10, 2013

Minister of Education Nalton Brangman’s suggestion that the PLP Leader and Shadow Minister of Education refused to meet with him is “simply untrue,” Shadow Education Minister Walton Brown said today [Oct 10].

Mr Brown said, “During Wednesday’s Senate session, the Minister of Education Nalton Brangman continued to deliberately mislead his fellow Senators and the people of Bermuda. For Minister Brangman to suggest that both the PLP Leader and I, as the Shadow Minister of Education have refused to meet with him is simply untrue.

“From day one, we have been open to meeting with any and every OBA Minister to find solutions to the challenges facing our people. In fact, in late June the Minister and I, along with Permanent Secretary Warren Jones had a three hour meeting where I was fully briefed on all major education initiatives and issues. The Minister subsequently authorised the PS to respond to me directly on any education query I might have, which PS Jones has done.

“What is so odd about the Minister’s statement on Wednesday is that we had such a cordial conversation just two days before when I made a courtesy visit to the Senate and he agreed to facilitate a meeting between the Commissioner of Education Dr Heatley and myself.

“It should also be noted that when the PLP proposed eliminating the middle school system in our Reply to the Throne Speech this was flatly rejected by the OBA government. Just a few weeks ago, however, we note with interest the Minister attempting to shift blame on middle school teachers.

“My actions are consistent with the PLP’s commitment to engaging in a collaborative approach with the OBA government; I intend to stay on this course and want us to work to keep partisan politics out of getting the education system right,” concluded Mr Brown.

  1. tricks are for kids.... says:

All this going back and forth with the so called Adult Leaders and yet we EXPECT our young people to act accordingly……hmmmm…go figure……

    • sonso says:

i was thinking the same thing!

    • B. Trump says:

Well said Mr. Brown, this minister of Education continues to show his high level of incompetence. A political appointment gone wrong by the OBAubp REALLY>

  2. Hmmm says:

And the statement from Brown helps the country how exactly ??????

    • watching says:

he is clearing up yet another misspeak by the Education Minister.

      • sonso says:

notice how walton isnt the minister tho?

and frankly, after rereading the article, mr brown seems (in true PLP fashion) to be making a mountain out of mole hill as this press release doesnt really say anything other than “he wont play with me, so i am going to tell on the teacher”

        • watching says:

why does it matter if Walton is the Minister or not? The Minister made an incorrect statement, which MP Brown corrected. It doesn’t matter if he is a Minister or not.

    • B. Trump says:

Ensuring that the truth is spoken and not spin and lies. This is important, and your Political appointed Minister continues to speak with out his FACTS. He continues to make big ERRORS and More Judgment calls. Why do you keep such an incompetent Minister in place…he needs to walk the line..

  3. Hmmm says:

“From day one, we have been open to meeting with any and every OBA Minister to find solutions to the challenges facing our people”

I think you were in a huddle figuring out what the hell to do on day one. All suffering from shock…some really happy because finally they had a chance at the leadership. So I don’t think you are being entirely honest.

  4. Sad says:

    Hold on.

Earlier in the year it was revealed that the PLP have a long standing policy which prevents any elected PLP representing from joining a join Cabinet as well as prohibiting them from joining any Government boards as their participation could assist the Government in retaining power.

PLP’s kumbuyah cries are simply lies.

Mr. Brown please enlighten us on the sweetheart deal that the owner of Coco Reef was given by you and your team while you were on the BDA College Board. You know the lease that was altered, after passing the House vote, to such an extent that the AG stated that it should have been retabled in the House as the original lease differed so much that it warranted to be debated again.

  5. Vote for Me says:

We have to commend the Minister for his honesty.

If he was wrong, he will publicly apologise. He apologises frequently.

  6. Paying attention says:

    I believe Minister Brangman.

  7. Mr B is clearly out of his depth. Do the right thing Craig.

  8. thief says:

    this is very petty.

  9. Truth is killin' me... says:

Grow up children…the people are really TIRED OF THIS NONSENSE!!

  10. Winnie Dread says:

Don’t know who refused, or who did not refuse to meet with whom. What I know Mr Brown there was a 14 year period that you had to make the necessary changes to the education system and what happened, and no this is not water under the bridge not until we see such changes. Only time will tell, only time.
