Bermuda’s Children Celebrate World Book Day

March 7, 2014

More than 1,500 books were distributed to nurseries and preschools throughout Bermuda yesterday [Mar 6] to mark “World Book Day,” thanks to a drive spearheaded by radio personality Nikita Robinson.

Mrs. Robinson praised the community for their support stating, “Through the generosity of our listeners and sponsors, including Brown & Company, the Hott 107.5 FM family is able to promote literacy and a love of the written word to the island’s most precious resource – our children”.

The public was invited to sponsor a preschool or nursery of their choice by purchasing one book for each child. Brown & Company offered a 10 percent discount to customers purchasing books to donate.

The staff of Inter-Island Communications adopted First Church of God Community Nursery & Preschool and read to children there yesterday, while volunteers did the same at other island preschools.

A few of the island’s politicians participated in the event as well, with Minister of Public Safety Michael Dunkley reading at Happy Valley Child Care, Deputy Speaker Suzann Roberts-Holshouser reading at Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy, MP Michael Weeks reading at Creative Touch Home Preschool, and former Cabinet Minister Lt/Col David Burch reading at Seasons Learning Center.

According to the official World Book Day website, “World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and, most importantly, reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

“The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.”
