CARIFTA Swimming Now Underway In Aruba

[Updated] The 2014 CARIFTA Swimming Championships is now underway in Aruba, with Bermuda’s swimmers taking to the pool for the first round of preliminaries this morning [Apr 22].

The team started off strong, with several swimmers setting new Personal Bests [PB], and Shannon Hassell, Emma Harvey, Ethan Daley and Jesse Washington all qualifying for this evening’s finals.

Bermuda’s 14-strong swimming team consists of Shannon Hassell, Madelyn Moore, Ashley Irby, Philip Hagen, Jesse Washington, Emma Harvey, Alex Pilgrim, Alyssa Paynter, Keagan Wooley, Brett Smith, Nicholas Brando, Jude Moseley, Ethan Daley and Isabelle Dutranoit.

Isabelle Dutranoit swam a PB during the 11-12 Girls 200 LC Meter Breaststroke finishing 16th with a time of 3:22.69. Ethan Daley swam a PB during the 11-12 Boys 200 LC Meter Breaststroke finishing 14th clocking 3:04.66 and Keagan Wooley swam a PB finishing 16th clocking 3:16.03.

During the 11-12 Girls 50 LC Meter Backstroke, Ashley Irby finished 12th clocking a PB time of 34.81, Nicholas Brando also set a new PB when he touched the wall taking part in the 11-12 Boys 50 LC Meter Backstroke in a time of 33.96.

Shannon Hassell will compete in the 13-14 Girls 50 LC Meter Backstroke Final, this after finishing 5th with a PB time of 32.96, while favorite Madelyn Moore was disqualified. Jesse Washington was disqualified taking part in the 13-14 Boys 50 LC Meter Backstroke.

Philip Hagen finished 15th in the 15-17 Boys 50 LC Meter Backstroke with a time of 31.49, Emma Harvey will swim in the 11-12 Girls 100 LC Meter Butterfly Final after finishing second touching the wall in PB time of 1:10.05, Alyssa Paynter finished 17th clocking 1:20.61.

Daley reached the 11-12 Boys 100 LC Meter Butterfly Final with the 7th fastest qualifying time touching the wall in a PB time of 1:09.82, Moore missed out on a spot in the 13-14 Girls 100 LC Meter Butterfly Final when she finished 10th with a PB time of 1:11.72 and Washington recorded the fastest qualifying time in the 13-14 Boys 100 LC Meter Butterfly swimming a PB 1:00.66.

Update 6.01pm: National Swim Coach Ben Smith confirms that, swimming in the 50m backstroke, 12 year old’s Emma Harvey’s time of 32.15 broke the Bermuda age group record and the CARIFTA age group record. She is pictured below in action this morning in a photo courtesy of Doug Patterson.
