Facebook Goes Down For More Than 2 Hours

June 19, 2014

Facebook users around the world were unable to access the popular social media service for more than two hours this morning [June 19], instead seeing a message that said, “Sorry, something went wrong,” as the world’s second most-visited website in the world, ranking behind only Google, experienced serious technical difficulties.

Facebook responded to the outage soon after coming back online, with a spokesperson saying, “Earlier this morning, we experienced an issue that prevented people from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time. We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100 percent. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

According to The Next Web, in total, Facebook had 1.19 billion active users in total as of September 2013, including 728 million daily active users.

Many of those users flocked to competing social media websites like Twitter and Google+ to discuss the outage, with some expressing frustration at losing access to a service that has become an integral part of their daily lives, according to the Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail said, “This isn’t the first time the company has experienced a major outage. In October 2013, the social network was down for four hours, with the site blaming the outage on network maintenance. Facebook prevented people from posting new statuses, writing on walls and making payments.

“Reports suggest the tech giant makes about $15,000 in revenue every 60 seconds. This would suggest the latest outage, lasting just 30 minutes, cost the company almost $500,000.”
