Premier Dunkley On Thad Hollis’ Resignation

July 23, 2014

Following the resignation of former OBA Chairman Thad Hollis, MP Susan Jackson will serve as acting Chairman, Premier Michael Dunkley said today.

Thad Hollis resigned from the position on Monday, only a few days after he released his findings into the “JetGate” affair, which was centered around the $350,000 donation from Nathan Landow and his associates.

Premier Dunkley said, “As you have no doubt heard, Mr. Thad Hollis has resigned as chairman of the One Bermuda Alliance.

“I would like to thank Mr. Hollis for his work as chairman, and wish him well as he moves on with his life.

“With his departure, Deputy Chair Ms Susan Jackson, our Member of Parliament for Pembroke South West, will serve as acting Chairman upon the approval of the Executive pursuant to our Constitution. She will be assisted by Ms Karen Magnum, who will continue in her role as Deputy Chairman.

“This arrangement is to stand until our Annual General Meeting on September 29, when a Party Leader, Deputy Leader and Party Chairman will be elected. Nominations for these posts will be accepted after Cup Match.

“In regards to Mr. Hollis’s report, the Party’s Central Executive will review his findings to adopt any recommendations that will strengthen our operations.

“On this matter, I want to make it very clear that we will use this situation to build a stronger, more effective party to support the Government moving forward with the people’s business.

“We’ve accomplished a great deal since the election in terms of rebuilding the economic foundation of the Island, but much remains to be done to extend the security and opportunity all Bermudians need to grow and prosper.

“That is our mission and I intend to use the months ahead to continue moving forward using all our experience and energy to meet the pressing needs of the Bermudian people,” concluded the Premier

    • Speak Truth says:

The OBA has just made another negative and mis-step….S.Jackson whose record has a lot to be question now chai, are you kidding me

The Premier failing to acknowledge the real reason Mr. HOLLIS step down. Dunkley continues to cover up the Scandal that is hitting the OBA, this would have been a good time to come clean. Now the credibility of the OBA has hit an all time low as the two key players get handed a “Free out of Jail Card”.

      Bad look OBA…BAD

    • LOL (Original TM*) says:

You would not vote for the man and you know it. He’d have to be wearing PLP Green and he still would not maqke party leader or even chairman over there.

      LOL

  2. campervan says:

The comments of a wily captain who will pull the good ship Bermuda off the rocks and get her back into calm waters.
Thanks Dunk, you are a star.

    • Concerned Citizen says:

Hey camper…..what is Mr. Dunkleys view on same sex marriage? The same as Craig and others I’m told. Just saying/asking. Anyway, this release shows just how fast the OBA is imploding. It will not be pretty

    • frank says:

pepsi something to avoid over the holiday

  3. Logic76 says:

    And the implosion begins…

  4. REAL deal says:

PMD, all you have said is what makes the grass grows in Texas! Bullcrap!

You need to resign and beat PCC record as the shortest term Premier. OBA executives are all a disgrace to the voters.

Paying to win is bad, but paying to play into the community and build racial tensions is totally unforgivable.

    • Evie says:

Blah blah blah waste of effing film SMDH hahahahaha no one believes a word you say

    • campervan says:

Hush back there in the cheap seats,
let cap’m Dunk do his thing.
Theres lots of work to be done after the last 14 years.
Y’all had your turn and blew it.
It will turn out better for everyone.

      • wantwant cantget says:

        perfectly stated Campervan:

the “cheapseats” should just shutup and take whatever handout is given to us from the elite class in the “front”.

also 14 years is far too short of a time to equalize the balance of wealth…
which is the main issue here

    • REAL deal says:

      Question:

Could it be possible one of the watchmen for the signs are the ones that destroyed the large poster of Nandi Davis Crockwell, to make it look like a PLP supporter did this?

Mr. DaCosta lets see the list of who was in charge of the East end signs and the police should investigate this and pebble beach posts.

      • Rockfish#1and#2 says:

Damaging signs, and paying voters are subjects the Opposition would be well advised to keep at arms length.

        Nuff said!

        • LOL (Original TM*) says:

For real if these PLP supporters think the PLP have never bought votes before they are either lying or don’t know politics and I’m sure they do know politics.

    • haha says:

How is any of this building racial tensions?! If anything it’s the PLP that’s doing that now.

      • Follow the trail says:

Hiring black and white people to write offensive blogs, call into talk shows, write offensive letters to the editor of the newspapers and get them printed all putting down Black leaders in the community is down right racial and incitement.

        • LOL (Original TM*) says:

Guess you don’t read or listen to any of the things you listed. BWTF find out about your parties record on hirring bloggers, letterwriters etc. the PM blog comes to mind. Again this is just politics just like the PLP’s use of plantation rhedoric. PLP supporters even talk about how they think whites think its crazy and is not grounded in any truth.

LOL no man can know what’s in anothers mind unless ………….. magic isn’t real but forces that destroy are.

    • Ya boy says:

I’m sorry- paying to build racial tensions? do you not realize that is all the PLP do everyday with their version of ‘politics’?

    I need a hot toddy.

    Great evening all.

  9. Coffee says:

I reckon that the OBA did the grassroots program for the UBP … With the shortage of rain , no more grassroots . All UBP hands on deck from here on out .

  10. lifetime says:

    Thanks Hollis. Next in line!

  12. All fluff = Weak leadership says:

Not a word as to the discrepancy between Hollis and Fahy’s statements on the bank accounts / why Dodwell/Crockwell could disclose Green’s salary so quickly but no else’s / why he approved the decision to abandon the appeal and grant status in one swoop of a pen with no public consultation. Where’s the transparency and accountability?

    Smh

  13. Dreary says:

OBA moving forward with the people’s business.
The PLP,destroyed the economy the OBA will bring it back.

    • flikel says:

“For many years Bermuda enjoyed a strong economy and booming international business sector. In many ways, we felt immune to the hardships that other countries were experiencing around the world; however, the world changed when the global financial crisis hit in 2008″

“Bermuda’s economy was heavily weighted on two main industries, financial services and tourism. Both industries were the worst hit in the global financial crisis. As a result, businesses contracted shedding jobs and then, people tended to travel less because they tried to save money. Further contributing to our woes, was that Bermuda’s main trading partners, the US and the UK, both suffered greatly as a result of the financial crisis.”

This is from the Deputy Chairman of Bermuda Business Development Agency, who himself, is former reinsurance executive.

No where in his assessment of Bermuda’s economic decline does he reference the PLP and attributes Bermuda’s issues to the global financial crisis.

So why do so many people continue to blame the PLP? The PLP did not cause the global financial crisis.

It is popular to blame everything on the PLP, especially when the OBA really has no ideas on how to fix the issue. However, the truth does come out and this constant blaming of the PLP actually does more harm than good, for the OBA.

Instead of being honest, about the situation, and relying on the blame game, they are not securing the confidence and votes of the people.

The blame game may get you elected, but it will not keep you elected.

    • wantwant cantget says:

i could have sworn that there was a worldwide economic meltdown.
but i guess if OBA were in this wouldnt have affected Bermuda eh?

  14. Come On Man says:

Why is it these people resign with no explanation as to why the resignation. So much for transparentness. It’s like having someone working for you, building your house, and not telling you how and where they are getting the materials.

  15. Triangle Drifter says:

Ok so Thad Hollis has resigned. A big loss to the OBA.Don’t dwel on it. Move on.

The PLP controlled bloggers are out in force. That is quite obvious. They have received their orders. Drag this issue out as long as you can. No matter that it really is not that important.

What is important is to keep attention away from the successes of the OBA in repairing the disaster that was the PLP Government.

    • Danielle says:

You really love sticking your head in the sand don’t you?
I suppose everything from Nandigate to Jetgate is also the fault of the PLP bloggers?
The OBA is in a mess of their own making. In under two years in office, their messes and scandals are rapidly mounting up. Yet all you can say is don’t ‘dwell’ on it?
You sure are letting them off easy. No matter what they do, you defend them. You would NEVER give the PLP the same. In fact, even though you people ask that we not dwell on the OBA’s “mistakes”, you do nothing but dwell on the PLP’s. What a double standard!

      • BlueFamiliar says:

Kind of weird that even with the scandals going on they’re still working steadily on, and getting done, things for the betterment of Bermuda and Bermudians, isn’t it?

      • Triangle Drifter says:

The gate this & gate that has gotten very old. Check with Alaska Hall. See if anyone can come up with an original thought for you.

The Nandi issue & $350g issue’s are private, not involving the public. Maybe you need reminding of money donated to thePLP in 1998 by a certain foreigner who has since been found guilty of questionable busines practices.

Watch where you are standing when you are throwing stones. You could break glass in your own house.

    • wantwant cantget says:

TD why did Thad Hollis resign? is it because of something wrong with OBA

    • Come On Man says:

What they the OBA and it seems you want is for people who you don’t agree with to stop and go away and shut up, well i’m afraid this time it’s not gonna happen.

  16. X man says:

The Premier appears to be holding firm but it’s the People under him that’s come into question.- the Govt.of the day
just needs to sort out it’s affairs very quickly – then do what they had promised….. and offcourse the PLP is ready to
jump on anything – and off-course by now has had the expected or more than welcoming results for them.
Some call the PLP trouble makers but this is whats expected when a Politcal Party wants the power back – but Bermudians
as a whole are asking – WHAT NEXT! and Who’s Next — It’s Fahy turn next [ Bank Account issue ] – it could be a PLP MP – after that!

  18. JUNK YARD DOG says:

All this back and forth slander and people bashing servers no purpose.

You have no self respect if you show no respect for another.

Is this country better off with all the diversionary smoke and mirrors?

We all loose if the other changes the subject

The US Government gave Bermuda $11 mill to fix the Causeway swing bridge .

The bridge never got fixed. So ! where did that money go?

What happened to the proceeds in the millions from the sale of B.H.C. mortgages to the banks ?

We need to deal with and fix our financial problems. It is called accountability.

The longer we leave any problem the worse it gets.

    • sswhite says:

this country was founded on division – or at the very least used that division to arrive at where we are now – and blacks cannot bear he sole blame for that. look at the fruit of the seeds white/european colonialism has reaped world wide and a pattern begins to emerge. there is a common denominator in this equation but some are unwilling to accept the truth in that matter. i often wonder how whites would react if history was reversed and they were disadvantaged in the same way as the “primitive” “colored” folks of many regions worldwide were historically. I wonder if they in witness of their futures being stripped away and forever more altered irreparably through overt and institutionalized rascism and brutality would be so forgiving? Building the wealth of your “masters” to be then cast in the the rubbish bins of society as one would do with a worn out tool. Oh for sure you would not react in the same way…you would indeed say lets move on and forget the events that led to this point…much like the mother can truly forgive the murderer of her child i suppose…

Any way I just wanted to say that politicians are like soiled diapers – full of shyte and in need of regular changing.

a little note to white folk. it is easy to be at the top of the pyramid isn’t it? looking out at the vast expanses of your spoils…whether it is your perceived superiority that got you there or good ole fashioned wickedness is not for me to decide – that will be the events of your judgement day.

of yes revert to your tactic of calling the truth teller “racist” if you want but the truth while “offensive” is best served at any temperature and at any time of day.

  19. Where's the Love OBA? says:

I just see throats getting cut left and right. OBA doesn’t care about who helped them get elected. I’m starting to believe this WAS a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The new faces we saw in the OBA are dropping one by one and all that will be left is UBP. And before this becomes a PLP and OBA battle I didn’t vote PLP i voted OBA AND I’m a paid OBA member. It’s sad to see that there was such a push for a change when it first established and now we are going back to the old ways so fast. PMD doesn’t see the lives he’s impacting with his decisions. If Thad didn’t hand in his notice who’s to say he wasn’t going to be pushed out just like Craig? But we’ll continue letting PMD pull the strings. Let’s all just get the popcorn ready and see who’s next to be replaced with an old UBP face. WHO KNOWS maybe John Swan will make an appearance.

    • Sick n Tired says:

Wow!!!! I appreciate your honesty and candor. As a Bermudian, I saw the ploy from the onset of setting up certain faces at the forefront, with a master plan looming beneath. Even though I found it frustrating, I have to admit that the people of Bermuda allowed the facade to fool them. Had the OBA been as transparent as they claimed to be, one must wonder how different the election results would have been.

At the end of the day, regardless of political affiliations, we must all be hones, just as you were, in accepting the fact that the old UBP guard masterminded a plan to get back in power, using dishonest and unethical tactics to do so, all under the premise that they were reaching out to people of all racial, demographic and socio-economic backgrounds, only to get in power.

The unfortunate part of all of this, is that the country has suffered and the rest of the world watches the demise that we are going through!!!!
