“Unhappy That Bermuda Is Under Consideration”
According to a report from the Associated Press, some of the potential America’s Cup participants are “unhappy that Bermuda is under consideration” to host the event as they “feel it will be a logistical nightmare.”
This comes after news that the Australians have withdrawn, with the AP saying it is the “first public sign of dissatisfaction with the direction sailing’s marquee regatta is going under defending champion Oracle Team USA.
“The move came six days after competitors met in Los Angeles to air their concerns. Among them are costs, not knowing the venue before the first installment of the $2 million entry fee is due and unhappiness that San Francisco was eliminated as host city,” reported the AP.
“Organizers had promised to contain costs in this America’s Cup cycle. Hamilton Island officials said they are bailing because of the cash outlay needed to compete for the oldest trophy in international sports.”
“Most foreign syndicates are unhappy that San Francisco, which provided a spectacular backdrop and steady wind last year, was eliminated from contention to host the 2017 regatta due to financial reasons.
“They also are unhappy that Bermuda is under consideration to host the challenger semifinals and finals, and the America’s Cup match in 2017. They feel it will be a logistical nightmare to take the competition to the British territory in the Atlantic Ocean. Bermuda is competing with San Diego to host the racing.
“While San Diego Bay would provide arena-style sailing, there are concerns that the wind won’t be strong enough,” continued the AP report.
Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald also states a similar thing about Bermuda, reporting: “Bermuda isn’t favoured by the challengers who also aired disappointment that San Francisco had been rejected.”
The America’s Cup organizers confirmed they received notification that Australian team will withdraw from the 35th America’s Cup.
“We are very disappointed to be receiving this news,” said Russell Coutts, Director of the America’s Cup Event Authority. “We were excited to have Australia as a challenger and we were also looking forward to the prospect of holding America’s Cup World Series events in Australia.

Keep the AMERICA’S CUP in AMERICA…this is crazy…..BERMY NOT READY TO HOST SUCH AN EVENT.
We need to make ourselves ready by any means nessesary
You’d rather have Bermudians unemployed than to see success.
It is interesting that the concern about Bermuda is the logistics of holding it here, not the weather, not the actual course options that are the main questions.
Logistics are all the shoreside stuff, all of what it takes to get people accomodated & equipment here & into usable facilities, the backroom stuff that has to work to make an event happen.
Anyone reading the blogs populated by the nice OBA / UBP diehards would be unhappy that Bermuda is under consideration !
Yes TD, therefore we should consider and act on a plan(s) that will give us another edge for consideration. There are several initiatives that can take place to resolve landside and port facility issues. If Bermuda is serious about getting to host the AC, then we need to come together and make it our priority.
I would like to suggest that Govt host a “charette/forum” to see what infrastructure projects and other things that can be forwarded for consideration. The act of doing this is in itself a marketing tool. The clock is ticking folks!

Many thousands of Tourists who visit our shores.

Hmm interesting that they cited cost as one of the reasons. On that note the monies they make is a drop in the bucket as to what they will spend in Bermuda. Yes Bermuda is expensive, but you are racing million dollar yachts. No body cries when they have to move their teams to Australia to race and they are down under.
Logistically the whole thing can be done without a single container, mobile accomodation, mobile workshop, anything, crossing the Hamilton docks. There are ro ro ships, which can be chartered, that can dicharge right on to Morgans point. There are ro ro vehicle ferries which can be chartered & are more than capable of the job.
This is not much different from a military invasion where they have to land everything, often without proper port facilities. Turn Morgans Point into a temporary duty free zone for anything to do with the event. Collect duty on anything that is left behind, such as floating docks & marina equipment that locals might want to buy.
It can be done. There needs to be a will to make it happen.
If we are awarded the honour of hosting the event, I’m afraid that He Who Must Not be Named will find an excuse to call a STRIKE!

I’d say it does NOT look good for the Island as a venue with so many teams complaining and the Aussies threatening to pull-out completely!!!
San Diego will probably be a more suitable venue for this sport and has a lot more to offer!!
BDA is just not what these people are looking for – it’s their call and $$$ involved!!

AT FIRST – The press made it sound like it was a definite thing that we were to hold the event – now the story has changed.—- well how much will it cost Bermuda anyway.
Whenever there is a bid for a venue regardless of the hype behind it the outcome is not guaranteed.So that story has not changed. Also the immediate cost to Bermuda isn’t even close to the amount of money that will come into the island as a result.Will it be easy to host the event, no, is it possible, yes.
