Photo Set #4: 2014 Non-Mariners Race
The holiday weekend came to a close with the Non-Mariners Race taking place on Sunday afternoon [Aug 3] at the Sandys Boat Club, with large crowds in attendance as the ”non-boats” entered the water, with most collapsing and sinking within minutes.
The Non-Mariners Race started decades ago when a group of drinking friends debated the flotation properties of baby carriages, and ended up trying to sail a baby carriage from Albuoy’s Point to Whites Island. This unsuccessful boating attempt was the start of what is now an annual tradition.
The “non-event” kicks off with the “non-colors raising,” which is followed by “non-penguins fly past,” which is followed by the march on by the “non-calypso pipe band,” which sees the band members dressed in rather unusual attire.
One float paid tribute to the closure of the Bermuda Sun newspaper, another played on the now infamous “White Mental Illness” sign, while the “JetGate” controversy was highlighted with an over-sized Dunkley’s Dairy milk carton “boat” listing the ingredients as $350,000 missing; 1 Jet; 6,000 PRC, 3 Resignations, and 1 NonGaming vote.
