September 17, 2014

Despite a high surf caused by Hurricane Eduardo’s fury as it churned by the island yesterday [Sept 16], The Centre on Philanthropy successfully hosted its sixth annual ‘Give Back Games’ beach-style Olympics on Horseshoe Bay. The event saw 9 corporate teams representing 9 local charities, competing for prize money for their chosen charity.

Tokio Millennium Re won the day and $10,000 for their charity, WindReach, as they swept to the finish gaining the best scores over some eight games including the Flipper and Shark Relays, Blindfolded Water Relay, a Sandcastle Competition and other intensely fun games aimed at testing the competitors’ athleticism.

Tokio Millenium Re also won the Give Back Games Facebook Challenge, winning an extra 5 points towards their final score for the day and also an additional $500 for their charity.

At the end of the event, over $48,000 was shared between the teams for their charities: 2nd place saw a tie with winners, ACE Tempest Re [competing for SCARS] & Hamilton Re [competing for Bermuda’s Brazilian Football] both won $6,250 each for their charities. All other companies won $4,250.00 for their charities.

Participating Companies and their Charities were:

  • Ace Tempest Re  - SCARS
  • Arch Reinsurance – PALS Bermuda
  • Argo Re – Centre Against Abuse
  • Axis – The Eliza Dolittle Society
  • Catlin – Spirit of Bermuda
  • Hamilton Re – Bermuda’s Brazilian Football

Tione Darrell, Engagement & Development Officer for the Centre on Philanthropy, said, “We are delighted to have hosted our sixth annual fundraising event, especially when our charities are experiencing financial constraints and increased demand for services.

“The teams had a great time competing and there was a lot of playful banter, while the non-profit organizations and our volunteers did a fabulous job of facilitating the games. The day was a big hit with everyone involved!’
