Strong Police Presence For New Year’s Events

December 30, 2014

The Christmas period passed with “few incidents of violence” police said today [Dec 30] and advised the public that the Police Service will show a strong, highly visible police presence for the New Year’s celebrations on Wednesday night and football games planned for New Year’s Day on Thursday.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes said, “This year we are pleased to report that the Christmas period passed with few incidents of violence and we wish to thank the public for their support.

“The Bermuda Police Service, assisted by the Bermuda Reserve Police, deployed extra crime prevention patrols throughout the holiday weekend and whilst there were some minor incidents, they were swiftly dealt with.

“It should be noted that whilst people generally drove in a safe manner over the holiday and the BPS worked to monitor traffic offences, there were still examples of poor driving behaviour exhibited. I am unhappy to report that there were two serious single vehicle collisions recorded over the period with persons remaining in the Intensive Care Unit at this time.

“Going forward into the New Year the Bermuda Police Service wishes to advise the public that we will continue to show a strong, highly visible police presence for the New Year’s celebrations on Wednesday night and football games planned for New Year’s Day on Thursday.

“We will of course be monitoring the roads and must remind the motoring public of the dangers of driving whilst impaired by drink or drugs. The New Year’s celebrations are often associated with unhealthy levels of alcohol consumption inevitably leading to incidences of poor driving behaviours and putting people at risk. If you plan to drink, we urge you to plan not to drive home.

“Whilst the majority of the island’s residents will celebrate the New Year responsibly we would like to put on notice that small but persistent group who insist on behaving in ways that impinge on others celebrations, that anyone found to be committing offences will be arrested and put before the courts.

“We ask that you consider your neighbours when holding New Year’s parties and in the same vein we ask householders to have some tolerance of those who do decide to hold gatherings to celebrate this New Year’s Eve.

“To conclude I urge the public to please do your part by acting responsibly, making good decisions, having tolerance of your neighbours and in the case of crime, “if you see something, say something”.

“On behalf of the Commissioner of Police and the men and women who serve in the Bermuda Police Service, we wish you a safe and prosperous 2015.”
