Golf: 32nd Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup Summary

January 1, 2015

The  Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup concluded, with some of the island’s top young golfers having been in action.

“Walker Campbell closed 2014 as a champion after coasting home to his first Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup title. Walker appeared to save his best golf of the week for the final round, heading into the 17th tee at one-over par. A quadruple bogey at the penultimate hole marred what was otherwise a very solid round but luckily the overall victory was all but assured by that point,” a spokesperson said.

“Hopefully the consistent play resulting in the victory this week will give Walker a boost in confidence heading into his spring season at school in South Carolina. Defending Champion Sam Wehmeyer put together his best round of the week closing with a 6-over par 77 but ended the week ruing missed opportunities on the greens.

“Elizabeth Parsons was crowned the Girls’ Champion after firing her best round of the week, closing with a 13-over par 84. Most encouraging for Elizabeth yesterday [Dec 31] was the way she recovered after being +7 after two holes, playing the next 16 holes in +6.

“While Elizabeth was not pushed hard this week, in the future she will be looking over her shoulder for 12 year old Vanessa Chychrun – a visitor to the island and playing in her first BJGA event. Vanessa closed with her best round of the week, a 98, breaking 100 for the first time in the competition.

“In the 13-15 division, Alex Mason went one better than last year, firing an impressive round of 77 to overcome overnight leader Mikus Ming. Alex had the lead heading into the final four holes in 2013 but let it slip to finish behind Dakota Lamb, but this year managed to hold his nerve down the stretch.

“Alex and Mikus were tied for the lead walking to the 14th tee but Alex navigated the tough closing five holes in even par to take the victory. Dakota Lamb was another to fire his best round of the week on the final day, closing with a 78, but was too far behind after the first two rounds to put pressure on the leaders.

“William Gray and Luke Watson, both home from boarding school on their Christmas breaks, rounded out the division.

“Kenny Leseur successfully defended his 2013 title in convincing fashion. After Kenny shot his career low round of 74 in round one the result was fairly certain, but Kenny struggled a little on day two before closing with a solid round of 81 today [Dec 31].

“It is important to remember that Kenny is only 10 years old so will be a fixture on the junior golf scene for another 8 years and we are looking forward to watching Kenny progress.

“Alex Withers-Clarke also had his career low Port Royal tournament round this week with an 88 on day two and was on course to better that today [Dec 31] after being only 8-over through 13 holes but the tough closing stretch put paid to those hopes. Alex finished with a round of 90 and a second place finish – his best finish in this event.

“Joe Watson was the most consistent golfer in the field and his third straight round of 93 was good enough for third place. Tyler Emery showed more of his old self today with his best round of the week [95]. Vanessa Chychrun [98] and Ethan Sousa [119] closed out the Red Tee division.

“The BJGA is grateful to the Fecchio family for their continued support of junior golf in Bermuda, nearly 40 years after they left the island. The BJGA looks forward to continuing the work that the Fecchio family did and supported when junior golf programming in Bermuda was in its infancy and making this game more accessible to young people.

“The BJGA also thanks Aon Benfield for their continued support of this event and junior golf in Bermuda. Thank you to Port Royal Golf Course for accommodating the juniors at this busy time of year and to Bella Vista for putting on a great spread for our prize giving in the middle of their preparations for their New Year’s Eve dinner.”
